Let Kids Be Kids: "Pre-teen prodigy at quarterback growing up fast"...
... Sheesh.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/arash_markazi/09/28/on.scene/index.html

David Sills is being hailed as one of the greatest quarterback prospects ever.

If you haven't heard of him yet, it's understandable. He just turned 11.

"I know he's young but there's always an exception. He's the exception," says Steve Clarkson, who runs the Air 7 Quarterback University, a national camp for quarterbacks. "By no means would I recommend this for ten-year olds, but he's a special case."

Sills isn't hard to spot on a crowded football field, filled with top high school prospects.

Yah, it's *possible* the kid just naturally gravitates towards this with such intensity. I think it's more likely that the kid is just trying to please his dad.

1. It's probably a mixture of both
Nationally and internationally ranked gymnists, for example, just can't get there by being pushed and wanting to please. The child has to really want it. I don't understand the decision to allow or "force" a child to spend practically his entire childhood in a gym, but I suppose it's the right decision for some.

5. Our son was a soccer prodigy at a very early age, BUT
knee & ankle injuries/surgeries (they come with the territory) ended it for him..

His attitute was great since HE was the one who wanted to play.. We cheered him on, but never made it more important than it was.. had he remained injury-free, who knows where he would have ended up.. he also lettered in football, golf & maintained a 4+ point grade average.. He knew that sports would not be his "ticket" and he played for the love of the sport..

Even now as an adult, he goes to World Cup and is already getting jazzed up about when it's in South Africa.. he could have ended up bitter and unhappy, but he's a realist...

Shame on parents who push their kids ..

6. I coached youth/high school softball for 30 years. Please give me
a dollar for every can't miss kid that survived until they graduated from high school. There are exceptions, but being called a phenomenon before they are 15 is a huge burden to carry.
