There was a knock on my door last evening and a man, I didn't know was standing there.
He was dressed in one of those navy blue 'uniforms', with 'Case' embroidered over the pocket. And he said he was there to thank me.

He said that he and his wife often walked past my yard to the local video store and had noticed my yard signs over the years.I put up a 'tally' board in August 2004. It's about 4' by 4' and is headed with 'Mission (NOT) Accomplished'. I keep a running tally of US military deaths in Iraq. For a while, I had another line with 'coalition deaths' and 'Iraq civilians', but those haven't been changed as they were just painted on. The sign is weather worn and looking old. At the base, I have another, about 2' by 18 inches and it says, 'Dying for Neo-Con Empire'. I used to have one saying 'Impeach Bush' and 'Bush lied and thousands died', but it finally fell apart after 3 winters. Now there's another small one saying, "Save the Bill of Rights'.

Anyway, this man said he had two sons in the Arkansas National Guard and that they had just been called up for Iraq. He said that he appreciated my sign and keeping the memory of each and every soldier killed there. He said that he feared for his sons as they would be providing 'protection' for convoys. They were both truck drivers. He said we had to get out of Iraq, it was a mistake, and that he wished we could get Bush out of office. And he thanked me.

4. I'm glad he shared his appreciation of you, with you!
Did you invite him to a peace vigil or ask him if he would join you by also posting signs in his yard?

5. I really appreciate people like you who have the guts to say what they think
loud and clear and without fear of retribution from the neighbors and others. I am a wuss here and I'd be afraid to put up any sign except one supporting a candidate.

7. Yard signs I saw in a neighborhood near mine
The signs originally said "Impeach Bush Now". But the resident had partially covered "Bush" with "Both of Them."

8. I hate to say it, but where was he when so many of us were
trying to get our government to not go to Iraq to begin with? Saddam be damned. He was not the problem. George W. Bush was and is.

29. umm... I think the OP meant a pair of coveralls that were navy blue
and the "CASE" was probably in reference to CASE equipment who makes everything from lawn mowers to earth movers..

At least that's *my* take on it, since the word uniforms was in parentheses, as was CASE

12. sinkingfeeling, That's wonderful you got a thank you, it must have given you a great feeling. :)
I once had a soldier give me a kiss and thank me for my support.

It was during a Columbus Day parade. It was held in the Morris Park section of the Bronx, thousands march in this parade every year along with Mayor Bloomberg. This parade has been around for over twenty-five years. I only missed it once and think Hillary marched in it that year.

Well anyway, it was 2004, Fahrenheit 9-11 just came out on video, and it was less then a month prior to the elections. I decided I wanted to do a reverse protest march. ...I placed my Mothers Against Bush bumper sticker on my handbag and I held my Fahrenheit 9-11 video out in plain sight as thousand walked by me.

Every year there would be a military band marching, but since the war, -maybe- just maybe there would be a jeep with a soldier walking along side it. ...Well, during my reverse protest, the soldier walked up to me, he thanked me for my support, kissed me, gave me an embossed Marine Corps sticker (which I still have placed next to my computer) and then told me he “liked my movie”.

I’m thinking of doing something this year. I thought maybe I’d make a sign that says....

MAYOR BLOOMBERG
Save the World
Talk about PNAC
and Cheney’s
Plan for
World Domination.

...I wonder if he would know what I was talking about.

13. I have been searching for a website that has a dailly update of soldier or Iraq deaths and
can't find one. Does anyone know a good site? I have a rolling marquee digital sign that I would like to program and stick in my window but can't find a decent place to find the accurate totals.

18. On route 20 just west of Michigan City, IN. a person has had a Get Out Of Iraq
sign in their front yard for the past several years. I drive a semi everyday to Michigan City. Often I think I would like to stop this damn truck, run up to the front door and thank the patriot who lives there...

19. Our signs, our speaking out does make a difference
I have a few stickers on my truck like "Impeach Bush, Torture Cheney" and "Abort your civil rights, vote Rethuglican". I parked in a local veterinarian office lot one day, and a woman came up to me to tell me she admired my bravery. It's a very conservative area, but still. That kind of shocked me, but I do believe that the more we speak out, more timid citizens may join us.

Congrats on moving that guy to come to a stranger's door and say thank you. :toast:

20. I did the same
To a women who lives in this vipers nest of paleo-cons.
For years and through the most contentious times she displayed the truth in her front yard and for all to see.
Finally I could no longer take it and had to stop knock on her door and say thank you, Thank you so very much for your conviction and courage.

I think by the look on her face that she really appreciated that, She even gave me an “Impeach Bush” sign which I prominently display ever year during our PRO-AM which is just down the block from me. All the regional re-pugs park along my street and have to walk right by it. :)

I also display it on all holidays right along with my flag,

Thanks Sue, Your a real patriot.

frothing at the mouth types?

I'm so glad to hear that there are those that appreciate what we are doing.

Thanks for sharing. :hi:

23. Me too,
I was run out of my job as a janitor in a school for wearing a t-shirt that said to impeach bush. The principal called me a "liberal commie", I told him that only my husband can call me that when he wants sex...idiot.
I was very happy to leave that job, I still miss the kids tho`.I had my yard signs stolen along with my mailbox, the police found my mailbox but not my yard signs...sigh... but then again I live in rural idaho so it was pretty much expected!!!

25. Payette...beautiful part of Idaho, but I can see why you'd feel like
a voice crying in the wilderness in those parts. I'm a refugee from a place in Oregon that's mired in the same mindset. For several weeks prior to the war I stood on a street corner in town with other Women in Black protesting the war, holding candles. Made the case for not going to war with some of the locals, finally gave up. There was no changing their minds. Always feel like I was lucky to get out of town alive...seriously...

Thanks for your courage in standing up for your beliefs, and welcome to DU.

you were! I hardly got to say anything the guy was screaming and seriously drunk.

I'll never understand stealing signs; it only takes a few to make another one. Do they expect us to just let it go when our signs get stolen? After the drunk spun out and left, I made another sign to add - Freedom of Speech.

Glad you got the mailbox back at least. :)

Welcome to DU, Waiting to exhale! :hi:
