Are the 2 political parties shifting identities?
I have seen a couple of articles on the online Wall Street Journal that posit that business is feeling betrayed by the Republican party, and another that says that a growing number of Republicans are against free trade.

GOP Is Losing Grip On Core Business Vote

Republicans Grow Skeptical On Free Trade

With that said, look at the Ron Paul campaign. If Ron Paul continues to gather support while the current Republican leadership continues to tank in popularity polls, I think that we could see a new Republican party that emphasizes the following:

Conservative social policies (no change there)
Nationalism and Protectionism (anti-free trade)
Anti-War (Isolationist)
Anti-Illegal Immigration
Extreme fiscal conservatism
Pro-union
Pro-environment

If this happens, the Democratic party would lean more towards DLC leadership, with a platform that emphasizes the following:

Globalization and Free trade
Pro-business
Liberal Social policies
Continued overseas military interventions
Increased social spending.

Basically, the parties would retain their social and moral stances, but they would switch their economic positions. Do you see this happening?

1. Todays' GOP is the American Fascist Party
The only real conservatives are Democrats.

2. If this shift did occur, who would you vote for?

Personally I would have to do a lot of soul searching and reasoning.

5. Both parties are captalist
The difference is that Republicans favor a dog-eat-dog style of capitalism, while Democrats favor a managed capitalism.

7. Keep in mind - the shift hasen't happened yet.
The most important thing we can do is defeat the fascists.

The Democratic Party is a big tent. Dems can grandstand & debate & whine & bicker among themselves - thats what Democracy is all about. Its messy & unkempt & sometimes frustrating.

The Fascists want NONE of that. NO debate, NO untidiness, EVERYONE is on message ALL the time - and always ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK! Its unAmerican and undemocratic (small "d").

Ask me again once they're gone.

3. Unregulated capitalism finally defeats itself and I think that may be part of what we are seeing ---
Remember . . . FDR regulated capitalism to save it --

Meanwhile, the corruption of government and the people in office now who were elected to bring about this corruption -- and the still fanatical religious influences over the party; many elected officials, in fact, being religious fanatics ... Sen. Orrin Hatch, for one -- Rep. Chris Smith in NJ
for another . . . would move me to state that I will never raise my hand to vote for a Republican ever again.

6. I wonder about the national debt...
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 02:19 PM by KansDem
The "Party of Fiscal Responsibility" has run up the debt to $10,000,000,000,000--that's $30,000 for every American.

I know very liberal progressives who decry this situation and some GOPers who see nothing wrong.

8. No. The GOP is still beholden to business interests
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 02:51 PM by book_worm
but business looks at who is bound to win and they support the Dems. They have done it before, too, and it's nothing new. Also the GOP is still the party of fundies, anti-choice. They still cater to them and Ron Paul is no different. Paul is ardently anti choice and extremely conservative. But the Democrats do do a better job on deficits contrary to the GOP. Is that bad? I don't think so.
