The Nation: Hillary won't commit to renew Constitution; all other Dems have
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 03:46 PM by Holly_Hobby
Illinois Senator Barack Obama has finally signed the American Freedom Pledge, joining his fellow Democratic presidential candidates in encouraging the restoration of basic Constitutional principles after the battering they have taken during the Bush-Cheney era.

All the Democrats, that is, except New York Senator Hillary Clinton.

The effort to get presidential contenders to sign on the American Freedom Pledge has been promoted by organizations ranging from the Center for Constitutional Rights to Human Rights Watch, MoveOn.org , Amnesty International USA, the Brennan Center for Justice, the Campaign to Defend the Constitution, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and True Majority.

The pledge is anything but radical. It simply asks candidates to affirm a statement that reads: "We are Americans, and in our America we do not torture, we do not imprison people without charge or legal remedy, we do not tap people's phones and emails without a court order, and above all we do not give any President unchecked power. I pledge to fight to protect and defend the Constitution from attack by any President."

...

The freedom campaign is promising to turn the heat up on Clinton and Republicans presidential contenders -- aside from Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who signed on to a similar American Freedom Agenda statement promoted by conservative defenders of the Constitution.

"We are very pleased that Senator Obama has joined so many of his colleagues in signing the American Freedom Pledge," says freedom campaign co-founder Naomi Wolf. "But we will not be satisfied until we receive a solid commitment from each and every one of the presidential candidates. This is not just another request from an interest group; this is a test of whether our next president will be true to the vision of our Founders. Any candidate who does not express strong support for defending the Constitution does not deserve to be president."

On Edit: Several posters indicate she just signed it.

19. Technically, Clinton did not sign the pledge.
Instead, she sent a letter outlining her principles and broad agreement with the group's stance,
in a manner similar to responses sent by Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., and former senator John Edwards, D-N.C.

23. Why is it a 'little nit picky'?
Either she signed or she didn't. Which is it? Does she agree to all the principles stated or does she disagee with some of them? Which is it? Voters have a right to know.

24. But only just recently
I get a "the check's in the mail" feeling, as if the letter was only drafted when the trouble started.

2. OTOH,
HRC is committed to permanent military bases in Iraq and sounds as though she is committed to aggression against Iran.

5. She has said that there will still be combat involving US Troops too. Edwards
just said, again, that he would only leave enough troops in Iraq to guard our embassy, as is done all over the world. Edwards would withdraw all combat troops. :toast:

16. There's no way she could get Clark's endorsement if she favored bombing Iran
Maybe I'm a sucker. But it'll be easier to swallow her nomination because Clark endorsed her. I still think he made a mistake, but Clark is a real liberal with more character than any other politician active today. It's a mistake I can respect and may one day have to get behind.

I just hope I don't live to regret it.

8. I wish to hell you people would give it a rest
It is so disheartening to see the posts by the same old same old over and over about Hillary. What in the hell would you people do if the Hillary supporters would post negatively every other message about Obama.

If you love the guy so much show you are a Democratic American and post his good points. What he says, what he does, instead of trying to tear down the character of his opponent. You are getting more and more like the republicans every day. If he is the best candidate as you say, make people believe he is, tell they journal why. The more you slam his opponents they more they dig in. I am so glad Edwards supporters are not like that.

25. Give it a rest?
I want to know before I go to the voting booth if she supports the signing statements of the current administration. Will she allow those who have been at Gitmo a fair trail, does she support non-court ordered wiretaps, what is her withdrawal plan, if any.

I've seen her in debates and on talk shows, but she has never said what she will do about habeous corpus (Gitmo) or many of the many executive orders that Bushie has signed without Congressional approval.

I want to hear her views on this and many other subjects, but recently all I hear is silence.
