We have war criminals in the White House. What are we going to do about it?
The way in which conservative lawyers, and conservative intellectuals, and conservative journalists aided and abetted these war crimes; the way in which the president of the United States revealed so much contempt for the law that he put a candidate to run the Office of Legal Counsel on probation before he appointed him in order to keep the torture regime in place, the way in which Republicans and Democrats in the Congress pathetically refused to stand up to these violations of American honor and decency in any serious way (and, I'm sorry, Senator McCain, but in the end, you caved, as you always do lately): these will go down in history as some of the most shameful decisions these people ever made. Perhaps a sudden, panicked decision by the president to use torture after 9/11 is understandable if unforgivable. But the relentless, sustained attempt to make torture permanent part of the war-powers of the president, even to the point of abusing the law beyond recognition, removes any benefit of the doubt from these people. And they did it all in secret - and lied about it when Abu Ghraib emerged. They upended two centuries of American humane detention and interrogation practices without even letting us know. And the decision to allow one man - the decider - to pre-empt and knowingly distort the rule of law in order to detain and torture anyone he wants - is a function not of conservatism, but of fascism.

...................

There is no doubt - no doubt at all - that these tactics are torture and subject to prosecution as war crimes. We know this because the law is very clear when you don't have war criminals like AEI's John Yoo rewriting it to give one man unchecked power. We know this because the very same techniques - hypothermia, long-time standing, beating - and even the very same term "enhanced interrogation techniques" - "verschaerfte Vernehmung" in the original German - were once prosecuted by American forces as war crimes. The perpetrators were the Gestapo. The penalty was death. You can verify the history here.

We have war criminals in the White House. What are we going to do about it?

3. Apparently, nothing.
Bush's War On America is allowed to continue unabated, as he repeatedly advocates immoral, illegal, un-American policies rejected by 60, 70, or in some cases 80% of the American public, which has no say whatsoever in what America does. What America does is determined by the 20%er Bushbots, the very worst the country has to offer. This awful minority gets their way on everything, while the majority gets its way on nothing. Welcome to "democracy", American style.

4. I don't think they get whats going on.
They listen to the propaganda on the radio and FAUX News.

I had a customer tell me that all there is is Conservative radio, he can't find a Liberal channel.

He listens to all the crap. Limpballs, Cunningham, etc.

Then he said "How do you know what you read is all lies, you know it is a Liberal Media".

I said "If its a Liberal Media, why can't you find a Liberal radio station"??

Don't they realize they own both?

He even questioned the validity of the A.P like it was all lies!!

"How do I know they don't make up the news they print?"

I looked at him when he left and said "I 'm glad your guys have the right to print their reality, and Liberals should have the right to print what theirs. It's called a Free Press and without it you are not FREE!"

Freedom to have your own opinion and not go to jail for it!

I told him that shit makes Ben Franklin turn in his grave!!

5. Stomp our feet and make angry faces?
What else can we do at this point. I'm basically resigned to the fact that the Democratic leaders we elected aren't going to do a damned thing.

9. Nothing
We are all caught within a corrupt system. Our means of communicating with the government has been severed. We have too long been rendered mute as we bask in the glow of the television imagining ourselves partaking in the process when in fact we have been sitting for decades in a slumber brought on by watching instead of participating. We believe we are taking part in things because we are entertained by those who do partake in things on the television. We believe we partake in debate when we see people argue about things. But in truth we are silent. Silent and controlled.

We are going to do nothing because the system is so totally corrupted that it is not able to be fixed by a few people standing up and pointing out the problems. It needs to be torn down and restored to what it once was or something new. But doing so would change our place in the world. It would change everything. People's lives would be altered. And not in some minor way. We would have to throw Corporations under the bus. We would have to dismantle our place in the economic food chain. We would lose our privileged way of life.

So instead we shall sit here and yell and complain to each other about how horrible everything is while we continue to do nothing as a society. We will not throw ourselves on the cogs of the machine that our nation has become. Instead we will continue to take our place as cogs in the machine. Until we wake up.

Are you awake?

12. Wow.
Taken right out of my head.

I wanted to post this subject last night. There is an inevitable answer. One which we dare not speak. In Berkeley, there were riots. The people took a piece of land, and made it People's Park. And the military came in and beat and killed them. The people had to rethink their method. I believe that was one step toward a bad kind of passivity. They were fairly unified in their goal- stop killing in Vietnam. And to me, that was the last time we ever saw resistance. There were white faces in those ranks of Black Panthers. I almost shed a tear when I think of it.

Here's how I see it in a nutshell. Better living through chemistry. After the War, the corporations got the farmers to use chemicals. It started going downhill from there. I only know this from my real estate ramblings. Meeting the old timers. Suddenly just having a horse and a cow on a pasture wasn't good enough. Now they had to rent fields. But the whole idea was that someone in a company was going to do something for us. And then the avalanche of consumerism. Ford. Then we stopped doing for ourselves. After all it's way way easier than pulling the feathers off a chicken before cooking it. Have it already done for us. Just buy it. Now everything is that way. Even our bread is pre-sliced. Then police became more than just the guy on the corner. They became our border collies. Stay in line. Or else. We don't do a damn thing. And now we don't even think a damn thing.

I kind of lost track. I should use some brevity. You made the point much better. I see so many examples. They all mean the same thing to me- Our absence from the very system to which we belong.

I worry that between the fact that our government has become one of military force, and that waking up and returning to a roll of active participation will take so long, we will not come out of this in time for it to be done in any humane fashion.

I really have been pleasantly surprised by Gore's discussion of the relationship of the public to television. Maybe we'll get lucky and find ourselves with an educated and honest president. Trickle down awareness?

11. Shhhh! You're making too much noise.
Rush will say bad things about us.

Besides, If Hillary is going to get elected, she will need Republicans to cross over to make up for the Looney Far Left Finge votes the DLC is throwing away.

If they think Hillary will actually put the War Criminals in jail, they won't vote for her.

Hillary will treat the rich, white criminals the same way her husband treated the rich, white criminals of the Bush41 administration.

14. Tough question and the absence of substantive answers underscores the
difficult position the American people are in in every policy area. The mechanisms are in place for virtual impunity and invulnerability.

The absence of meaningful oversight is central to understanding the nature of our predicament and how deep of a hole we're in. That a rogue administration was installed is unfortunate...but the fact that they've had free reign for more than 6 years is mind-boggling, disturbing, chilling, and frightening.

The torture issue is emblematic of this administration's disdain for rules, ethics, and morals and is therefore emblematic of their total victory so far. Amazing and sickening. It is this administration's version of the image of a boot stepping on a human face forever (1984).

15.  The core of this rotten apple is
The fact that we have not only allowed the corporations to gain power , citizens have enabled it through willfull ignorence . Buy cheap and sell off not only your job but someone elses .

This includes the medical industrial complex and everything else we have been sold as an ideal .

As long as the corporations control the government and the media it seems there will always be cover ups and lies to weed through so there for what political party can you really trust and what exactly is their motive . Forget about the front they put up and what they claim to stand for . The driving force is the money in all cases , we don't pick our reps they are chosen for us and we are left to chose the better of two evils .

It's a damn sick joke , someone needs to stick a pin in the DC bubble and let the truth out and let the reality in . This will not be Hillary or Obama .

Been through this crap my entire 58 years and I see my entire life was based on lies and once again here we are with more problmes than I ever dreamed we would have . It's not only the wars , It's the economy , global warming , and the dumbing down of america which will in the end be the death of all of us . Our entire country has evolved into a freak show in a magnatude never seen before .

I have concluded we were also sold a bag of garbage with Pelosi and Reid along with many other politicians , they were chosen for us .
