Craig flushes plan to quit Senate - Nightmare looms for GOP -- televised hearings possible

BY CHARLES BABINGTON

WASHINGTON -- Idaho Sen. Larry Craig lost a bid Thursday to withdraw his guilty plea in a men's room sex sting but defiantly vowed to finish his Senate term, prolonging a headache for Republican leaders already facing a tough political climate.

Craig had announced plans to resign his seat by Sept. 30, but wavered when he went to court in hopes of withdrawing his plea.

He issued a statement Thursday on staying in the Senate shortly after Idaho Republican Gov. Butch Otter said he had selected a replacement for Craig in the event of a vacancy.

''I will continue my effort to clear my name in the Senate Ethics Committee -- something that is not possible if I am not serving in the Senate," Craig said.

3. I'd assume this is going to backfire
but I am ever amazed by the way the repukes seem to weasel out of responsibility for everything. It'll be interesting to watch.

5. Tap on Larry!
If Bush gets to stay after all of his crimes then you shouldn't have to leave either.

7. You know what the sad thing is?
Given the Dems lack of follow through on scandal after scandal after scandal, I'm fairly certain that Larry's going to be allowed to finish out his term without facing any sort of punishment. Sad, but given the track record:shrug:

9. Punishing him isn't the good part. Continued chatter is the good part.
Getting people to keep the image of a Republican pol who just won't take responsibility in the back of their minds could be most helpful. Opens minds to noticing other hypocrite Republicans who lie and duck responsibility.

A stubborn Larry Craig, refusing to tow this particular party line and bow out, may be an asset to the effort to hack through a lot of cognitive dissonance. ;)

10. Oh, won't you stay,
just a little bit longer?
If the speaker don't mind, and the whip don't mind,
We're going to take a little time, to laugh our ass off!

Larry Craig, Tom DeLay, Duke Cunningham, Mark Foley, David Vitter. And this council of the damned is just in the last year.

12. "Senator, where is the TP you picked up and did not flush?" Was it clean or used?
"Senator, where is that toilet paper now? Did you put it in your suit pocket? Where did it go? Why didn't you go?"

Senator, will you please just GO?" "And, don't forget to flush yourself this time."

13. After the GOPOOP Outrage at craig...
...coupled with their forgiveness of vitter, I wonder if craig just wants to fuck his fellow republicans just by being there as an embarrassment.

14. Bush to Cheney, "We need more distractions from the oil wars." Cheney, "I can call Larry now."
Bush, "Do it. Gives the f**king Dem Senators something to do besides sending us subpoenas."

Cheney, "Good thinking. And a Republican villain will lower our heat. Vitter is just a cocky hero for every john."

However, I hope desperation does not make the GOP REALLY crazy.

16. I agree that Craig thinks the Vitter situation is unfair--by comparison, he's a victim of
the gayness of his deeds (but he's not, and never has been gay!), and of red state politics. I also think he thinks that Mitch McConnell, and perhaps a few others, will back down because they have some gay skeletons too. Larry's gonna take them all down with him, I hope. Sing, Larry!

Minneapolis, Minnesota - A Minnesota judge has rejected disgraced Idaho senator Larry Craig's bid to withdraw his guilty plea stemming from a men's room sex sting arrest.
A Minnesota judge has rejected disgraced senator Larry Craig's bid to withdraw his guilty plea stemming from a men's room sex sting arrest.

Craig, arrested in an airport bathroom while cruising for gay sex, said he wouldn't resign from the Senate while awaiting a judge's ruling on his effort to get his guilty plea withdrawn.

In a 27-page order, Judge Charles Porter found Craig had entered the guilty plea "accurately, voluntarily and intelligently" and it was too late to withdraw his admission.

Craig, who claims he is not gay, argued that he entered the plea without legal advice, fearing that the allegations would be made public.
