JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Gov. Matt Blunt's proposed budget for next year will include $500,000 to entice more veterinary students to work with farm animals.
A law enacted earlier this year authorized loans of up to $80,000 each for six veterinary students University of Missouri-Columbia. It would forgive $20,000 for each year the graduates work in a rural area and focus on treating farm animals.

Acting state veterinarian Taylor Woods said Missouri has 71 large-animal veterinarians, nine of whom are retiring or have physical problems performing the job and need to be replaced.
But most veterinary students prefer to work with pets, which typically is more financially lucrative.
