Man who owed as much as $100,000 felt trapped by his student loans and 'lower than low' that he had no job.

9/24/07

Jan Yoder was preparing for her son's funeral when the phone rang. It was another student loan collector wanting to know when her son would pay up.

Her terse response: Jason is dead. And, she said, "You are part of the reason he took his own life.''

Her terse response: Jason is dead. And, she said, "You are part of the reason he took his own life.''

It was those calls and the burden of crushing debt, she says, that led her depressed son to take the drastic action of killing himself late last month. He did so in the Illinois State University chemistry building in Normal -- in the very lab where he did his research to earn his master's degree.

1. Ask Carly; she's the one who said no American has a God-given right to a job.

Fortunately, HP fired her for her incompetence some 2 years after making that asinine remark. She still got a golden parachute; while all she fired merely got golden showers.

8. She said it, not me. Google the phrase with her name.

There's a lot out there.

4. That's tragic.
Something does need to be done about student loans and the cost of education in general.

6. Its a problem easily fixed
but there doesn't seem to be enough "willpower" in Congress or state houses to get it done. Politicians on both sides get hooked on the campaign contributions from these loan sharks.

7. I wonder if the collectors will still try to get money out of him

I was always taught that a debt dies with a person's death, but apparently there are ways for creditors to get around that.

10. They can't on a student loan.
It is one of the few ways that the government will help you if you have a student loan - at least for now.

11. That is so sad.
I've railed against student loans frequently on DU - thank you for the link to Student Loan Justice.
