Here is what Brownback actually said
"...In our inner cities, you're looking at 65-70 percent of the children born out of wedlock..." means:

Black people are a bunch of deadbeats with no morals.

And here's what people who respond with "It's a fact" are really saying: I don't care.

Tell me I'm off base on this. Because when talking about so called "moral values" (as if having children out of wedlock is so repugnant - No Republican would ever commit such a sin! :eyes:), the Republicans just can't help but ignore (and propagate) the social and economic conditions (also known as institutional racism and poverty) that lead to such "facts".

2. That interpretation is bigoted,
as is making it. However, saying "In our inner cities, you're looking at 65-70 percent of the children born out of wedlock" is not in and of itself bigoted. That is a statement of fact, and applying morality to facts is something they do, not something we do.

3. It's all part of the war on welfare
The Republicans have been trying to destroy welfare by characterizing welfare recipients as black, hypersexual, baby-machines who churn out children for free money. It is ludicrous, but plenty of suburban whites buy into this shit.

4. You are off base on this.
Not about your characterization of Brownback or his interpretation of those facts. But your interpretation of the DU members answers. I was reading people saying EXACTLY that the social and economic conditions which lead to those 'facts' were what needed changing.

BTW...I was one of the two people who said "other". I am not sure it is an actual fact and I don't understand what the point was. But that doesn't mean that I think that anybody that thought it was 'just a fact' is a Brownback apologist.

6. I think the main point is that single-parent families are much more likely to be in poverty.
Ninety percent of single-parent families are headed by females. Not surprisingly, single mothers with dependent children have the highest rate of poverty across all demographic groups (Olson & Banyard, 1993). Approximately 60 percent of U.S. children living in mother-only families are impoverished, compared with only 11 percent of two-parent families. The rate of poverty is even higher in African-American single-parent families, in which two out of every three children are poor.

7. Exactly. It is a problem which needs to be addressed, not ignored because it was
Brownback that mentioned it.

9. "There are 3 kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." - Mark Twain
Brownback's use of "facts" are thinly veiled demagoguery.
