Richard Owen, of The Times, in Rome

An explosion at a British-owned arms and ammunition factory near Rome has killed an Italian worker and injured at least 14 others, some seriously.

The blast, which was heard several kilometres away, took place at 10am at the Simmel Difesa (Simmel Defence) factory at Colleferro, 60km (38 miles) southeast of Rome. Police said that the cause of the explosion was not yet clear.

Some reports said the explosion appeared to have taken place in a magnesium store. Several of those injured have serious burns, police said, including one with 60 per cent burns who was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Rome

Simmel Difesa has long been a target for protests by Italian pacifist groups, which claim that it produces cluster bombs. The company denies this.

If you read Italian, there is a dossier put together by the activists in Colleferro: http://italy2.peacelink.org/disarmo/articles/art_20358.html

Can't we find another way to create jobs?
