Edwards on the Iraq war vote -- also the Kyl-Lieberman Iran vote

Eight days ago, while visiting New Hampshire, John Edwards apologized again for his vote as a United States Senator in support of the president's request.

At the same time, it's evident that Hillary Clinton has learned a very different lesson from the hoodwinking of the American people by George Bush and Dick Cheney.

John has learned that if you give George Bush even an inch of authority, he'll find a way to turn it into sanctioning a war. Hillary Clinton, however, has recently supported the Bush Administration by voting for a bill in Congress that calls the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization—a vote that takes America one step closer to war with Iran.

John talked about her vote and what this means during his visit to New Hampshire last week:

Hillary Clinton may try and argue all sides to justify her vote, but the truth is her vote has helped open the door for George Bush and Dick Cheney to go to war with Iran.

John has stated unequivocally that we cannot allow the president to use force against Iran when so many other diplomatic and economic options are still available.

2. i've been ignoring much of the campaign crap
and just recently signed on to the eblast lists for the top 4 dems. i'm most impressed with Edwards. i'm amazed actually -- i've been involved with dem campaigns since 1984 and i've never seen such a candid candidate. that means a lot to me.

3. I'd be more inclined to believe it was candor
if he had turned against the war before it became politically advantageous to do so.

4. it's got take a lot of courage to rebuke a vote you co-sponsored
that's the sort of humility and character we've been missing. he's not perfect. i haven't made up my mind if i'm on board -- an Edwardian -- but i like the noises he makes.

10. there's a meme on the part of the IWR supporters, that...
we little people can't possible understand ALL the complexities of the war. we can't appreciate what they deal with everyday (in not doing anything). we don't have "all the data." they're leaders, we're advocates -- we need to let them keep keeping on.

well, history proves that getting into war is EASY. getting out is always the shit-job. when the vote happened, everyone but Bush was being handed the shitjob and they should have seen it coming. us little people sure did.

so yeah, it's gonna suck getting us out of that war. there's going to be political bloodshed. but it has to happen. it's the only moral -- fuck, the only pragamatic option. we're BANKRUPT. we can't afford this little war party anymore.

9. once the dems saw how they were used/abused, they needed to sound the alarm
now, they are stuck holding the bag. it's just dumb not to admit you were fooled.

12. Certainly.
I'm glad for his turn. I don't think either his initial vote or his about-face were honestly done.

I'd still be happy to vote for him.

5. "i was wrong. and i'm going to have to live with the fact that i was wrong."
"i did not trust george bush ... and i made the decision to defer to him... you learn lessons."

when this vote was happening, my sense was that legislators couldn't make a politically acceptable argument that GW didn't deserve support. now, I THOUGHT, that once it came out that he was LYING US INTO WAR, that the dems who voted for it would turn around and make a lot of noise about being taken advantage of. that was a tremendous piece of political currency. you give trust, but when that trust is broken, you USE that to turn the boat around and head for shore. period.

6. JE's still my guy but I don't agree with him on her K/L vote
You don't stop doing your job and not call out the bad guys because the president might take a non-binding res and run with it. If he attacks Iran, it will be "managed" in a way to produce fear and garner support first. Trying to retrofit K/L wouldnt do it...

11. I think Edwards will make the most hay in the coming weeks
Even as a Kucinich supporter, I recognize that John's message is more and more speaking directly to the deep seeded concerns of regular folks.

He now walks a path of consistency - and acknowledges the mistakes he made in the past (and apologized).

My prediction is Edwards will ultimately be the BIG challenge to Hillary, as much as I wish it was Dennis! I think John has the best potential to show strong gains during the last 1/3 of the race to the primaries - and that would be in ALL sections of the country.

13. Kucinich being in the running is changing the debate and that's very important regardless.
DK has my heart -- I'm closest to him on all the issues (especially some very dear issues that no one else will touch).

I'm just amazed with Edwards' passion and "straight-talk" right now. it kinda feels like a dying person's campaign, in that he's just *going for it.* and i can't help but think that Elizabeth's cancer has something to do with that.
