The media, even Jon Stewart, has bent over for the Cheneys.
Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 04:05 PM by Atman
Lynne -- of course, not Darth himself -- has been on every talk show slamming Jimmy Carter and talking about how wonderful, patriotic and down-homey they are. Lynne has the balls to say (and I do believe she might actually have some) that Jimmy Carter is just conveniently out hawking a book or something, just before she holds up her own tome on the virtues of growing up in the McCarthy-Jim Crow era. It's a genius marketing coup, and of course the Veep's wife has a top-shelf agent to peddle her bullshit.

I'm not sure what the point is, other than utter depression that Americans might really be stupid enough to buy into all this shit and not understand when they're being played. As for Stewart, I know it was a major coup for him to get Mrs. Cheney on. A real feather in the proverbial cap. But he should have known her only purpose would be to blow smoke up America's ass. It might have been better to say "no," but then, maybe he doesn't have his taxes in order, or have a food taster/mail opener.

But the Cheneys wanted the airwaves today, and they got 'em. Cest la vie.

1. I thought Stewart got her pretty good last night
He made his point especially about her claim there there have been no terrorist attacks and he pointed out the attacks in England and Spain, etc.

2. "You do know that has been going on the last 6 years"
Mrs. Darth: "I am speaking of American interests":puke:

And we all know that America is only interested if you have enough oil

The audience kept their cool up until that point.;)

8. Oh yeah - and did you notice the deafening silence from the audience
when she babbled something about how well the administration has done? Not a single pair of hands clapped and Stewart gave the audience a kind of "Okay!" look.

12. Yep. It took some big brass ones for her (and him) to appear on TDS
...and it was STILL cool! :D:thumbsup:

13. You can tell she absolutely expected applause. She said it, cocked her eyes
but not her head toward the audience expecting to hear thunderous applause--and the silence was deafening.

She was obviously very peeved after that and from then on, she just wanted it over with.

My husband almost fell off the sofa laughing at that.

18. I noticed that too. But my favorite part was her quoting what her mother said...
...or grandmother, I forget.

But she thought it was so amazing that this woman said "you know, people are just people." Gee, really? You mean, she thinks this was the first time someone realized this?

From the BillO school of - wow, people are all alike no matter what color they are and I think I have to point that out because no one else knows that but me. :eyes:

Maybe they're more polite. I'm sure they were "warmed up" to be that way. But you can tell it's a smart group. :)

3. I agree that he got a couple of good jabs in. But I don't think...

...that she should have even been given the forum. She and her war-criminal husband can testify to The People from the witness stand, but they should not be given a forum to hawk their bullshit for fun and profit, while they deny their own daughter full legal rights, while they reap billions in profits from the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis.

Jon did fine. Except for the allowing her to be on air part.

Let the entire class in on your little secret. My guess is, you don't understand what the hell it is I'm talking about. But then, maybe I'm wrong. Clue us in.

29. I'm sorry...did you change your name to aquart?
I must have missed it.

Your post was quite clear.
You don't support free speech for people you dislike and anyone not agreeing with you is a sell-out of some sort.

And while I understand your anger at Lynne getting airtime...it's kind of what a country with free speech is about. I think John handles these situations very, very well. I am amazed that you are throwing stones at him. Hence the good grief response.

31. What a total POS post!
Your post was quite clear.

Do you actually believe the bullshit you just posted? That I don't believe in free speech? You're so far off-base it isn't even funny. I'm actually a free speech absolutist. But my post wasn't about "free speech." Lynne Cheney, or Atman, or Wlucinda has absolutely NO "free speech" right to go on a commercial broadcast and spout anything she wants. She had to be INVITED on TDS in order to spew her bile. No one had to let her be there. She had no "right" to be there.

My post was about how Stewart had no obligation to host her, and I personally think he should not have done so. Nothing about "free speech." Lynne Cheney could have easily found another hundred small-town AM dj's who'd have been thrilled to give her her "free speech." I'm just saying that it is time that we Democrats stop giving douche bags like Cheney a forum. When her publicist calls, say "Sorry, you're a reprehensible war criminal's spouse, and we don't feel our show is a proper forum for you" and be done with it.

Again, it's not a free speech issue. Nothing in the constitution says television comedy fake news shows have to provide forums for war criminals and profiteers.

Your response to my post was very ill-informed, right down to the "throwing stones at (Jon Stewart)" remark, which I clearly didn't do. You read what you wanted to read, and ignored the actual words.

I think you're expecting way too much out of a comedy show. He did all he could!

I thought he was surprisingly soft on her at times. I'd like to see how she would fare against Colbert, but I doubt she'd have the guts for that.

16. CNN, MSNBC, et al are "surprisingly soft"
Stewart did all he could, even tried to challenge her on whether or not Dick ever says he's wrong about something. (She became flustered and changed the subject.)

22. You know what? The OP isn't about Jon Stewart.
Read it again, please. I said "even Jon Stewart." And the post was about they Cheneys getting the air time to go after Jimmy Carter. This isn't a thread about Jon Stewart. I watch him every night. I know what his show is about, way more than you appear to know what this thread is about.

My post is about how the Cheneys managed to get their ugly, hateful mugs on every possible television show, including but not limited to the Daily Show. I regret even mentioning TDS, because it caused so many of you to completely lose sight of what I was posting about.

11. Well they way he acted separates our party from the republicans.
Look at the way the republican news readers go after a Democrat when they interview them. He might have hinted at some times to have fun, but he did not in any way disrespect and that shows the difference in US and THEM.

15. On the contrary; I think he did the nation a marvelous service.
He challenged her on every comment--but politely so.

The audience clearly wasn't friendly to her; witness the deafening silence after her rouse-the-true-believers "the president's doing a great job" when she paused a beat, expecting applause, and was met with stony silence.

Maybe you watched a different program, but I though Stewart played her very coolly and wisely--and she ended up looking bad.
