Typical Republican candidate:
"Gee folks, we will never raise taxes on you - taxes are bad because they pay for horrible social programs that liberals want to put into place like health care. However, we want to spend trillions on illegal wars fought on false pretenses and spend all kinds of money making sure that your jobs are outsourced overseas making your executives extremely rich. Then when this catches up to us, we will make sure a Democrat is in office so that they have to raise taxes and take the blame for all the debt we created. Oh, and you'll be one paying for it along with your children and grandchildren. Vote for us because we love Jesus and hate brown people!"
It really comes down to taxes for a lot of people when they go to the polls. Sadly enough, we as Democrats have done little to dispel the myth that we are the "taxation" party that will implement pork barrel programs that will only serve the poorest in our society. What we need to be shouting is that we are the party for all - and honestly mean it by cutting wasteful government spending and implementing real positive social programs for all in our society, not just the very poorest. When will a candidate actually start proposing common-sense change to the spending in this country and a plan to implement programs that will actually benefit our nation? We spend trillions in Iraq and propping up corporate interests here at home - why not start there and show in actual numbers how much we can save by eliminating the largest portion of these expenses and what programs we can implement in their place? That would actually resonate with voters that are honestly being squeezed by our unfair tax system and the rampant government spending that will inevitably catch up with all of us, even our children? I'm an employed professional who makes a nice salary and even I am being squeezed from month to month due to the state of our economy, health care, and rising prices in key sectors. If it is hurting me, then it most certainly is significantly impacting those who are not as fortunate!
It's a winning issue - I would just love to see a candidate who actually understands this concept and not merely play lip service to it.
