And the bad parent award goes to . . .
Northland woman sentenced for child endangerment
By GLENN E. RICE
The Kansas City Star

A 47-year-old woman will spend time in prison for endangering the welfare of her daughter when she thought the child was acting in defiance and refused to walk.

Authorities said Brenda Dehart neglected a developing tumor on her 9-year-old daughter’s spine. Doctors said the tumor left the child unable to walk or control her bowel and bladder functions.

Dehart, who was sentenced Thursday, pleaded guilty in July in Clay County Circuit Court to felony child endangerment. Dehart was sentenced to five years in prison. She will serve 120 days of shock time before becoming eligible for probation, court records said.

In December, police saw the girl lying on a mattress on her living room floor with sores on her feet, her legs frail and immobile.

According to court documents, the couple told authorities that when the girl stopped walking six months earlier, they thought she was acting in defiance because other children were making fun of how she walked.

1. Here's competition (sick, sick people):
Tx. couple accused of starving teen
All 5 child taken from mother, stepfather

A 13-year-old boy whose mother and stepfather allegedly locked him in a closet and fed him nothing but a liquid dietary supplement has been placed in Child Protective Services custody, along with his four siblings.

The teen weighed only 72 pounds when the couple took him to a Houston hospital Sept. 19 because his urine was brown, said CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin. A full examination showed that he had broken bones in various stages of healing, old burns, abrasions, scratches and bruises, Olguin told the Houston Chronicle for a story in its Friday editions.

Geneva Foster, 31, and Michael Ryan, 30, told authorities that the teen ate a lot but wouldn't gain weight, Olguin said. Investigators said the boy was the victim of near-starvation.

"Apparently, he was being locked either in the attic or the parents' bedroom closet, and the only thing he was being fed was cans of Ensure," Olguin said.

The boy gained about 10 pounds while hospitalized, Olguin said. He has since been placed in foster care, along with an 11-year-old girl and three boys, aged 9, 4 and 3. Ryan is the father of the three youngest children and the stepfather of the two oldest.

Olguin said the 13-year-old appeared to be the only one singled out.

2. There are days when I wonder why we can't sterilize people, but then
I remember that the Repugs would try to do the same to anyone that doesn't drink their koolaid.
