Why is Rush Limbaugh still on American Forces Radio and Television Service?
Edited on Sat Oct-13-07 07:49 PM by ProSense
Why?

AFRTS is the American Forces Radio and Television Service. It is part of the Department of Defense, and is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. The AFRTS mission is to communicate Department of Defense policies, priorities, programs, goals and initiatives. AFRTS provides stateside radio and television programming, "a touch of home," to U.S. service men and women, DoD civilians, and their families serving outside the continental United States. AFRTS includes the Radio and Television Production Office (RTPO), The Pentagon Channel NewsCenter, and the Defense Media Center.

1. Maybe Congress cannot do anything about it?
Taxpayers are paying for this AFR Network.

3. because the other 23 hours are just two stoners taking long hits off their bongs
and fumbling their 'dead' tapes into the cassette deck and talking about the really cool neon sign they saw last month at the head shop

There has to be some balance!

5. His Message Is the Official One
Limbaugh is doing exactly what the powers that be pay him to do: propagandize to the hapless slave army so they feel good about their war crimes.

15. That and the Michael J. Fox mockery are sadly typical.
It is maddening that people like Comedian Rush Limbaugh and Brave Sir Malkin have such a strong, loud presence in the public square, while rational people can only manage to whisper to each other.

10. Actually, I beleive that he was one of the most
requested radio programs by the conservative hacks in the military, and according to their policy they have to air the program regardless of the fact that Rush's program sucks.

12. None of the soldiers I know is a "conservative hack."
And I know a lot.

Maybe the rear echelon types prefer drug addict Limbaugh but not the grunts.

14. Naah, they don't 'have' to air anything. Politics enters into the management of AFRTS, like
everything else. It's an unfortunate reality. If they really played top ranked (by their listeners/viewers) material, you'd hear Howard Stern on the radio and probably endure a lot more wrestling programs on the telly.

Believe me, they haven't had a history of showing top rated TV shows or playing 'most popular' radio throughout their tenure...and those fucking MORMON ads they used to run--those were a constant gripe for me! They were public service ads, that highlighted a virtue like kindness or charity, that always ended with the tag line "Brought to you by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." They were HUGE during the Reagan era, and that is when the Mormons were ascendant in the USAF (they still have a massive shitload of Mormons in their commissioned ranks).

It's all bullshit. Send your loved ones over there tapes and DVDs of the good shit; that's the only way they'll get it. I was so happy when video tape finally came along--it completely changed what might have been some very ISOLATING tours for me. I would have been totally clueless about what was happening in America without the Almighty VCR. Even the COMMERCIALS were amusing, believe it or not...!!!

13. The answer is simple, although it disturbs me greatly.
1) AFRTS is part of the DoD (as you mentioned)

2) The DoD is the 2nd most conservative group in the world after the catholic church

3) Unfortunately that means rushbo, o'lielly, and coultergeist have free reign to spew their garbage

I'm one of the few Liberal active duty military members. We're greatly outnumbered by the morans, but we are out there. Some of us are even members of this site (Liberal Sailor comes to mind).

17. The Air Force might be ate up but the Army is coming around.
I have a lot of friends in infantry units. I was in the infantry for several years.

If I had to guess on political leanings of the units I was in it would be 33% - don't give a damn, 33% republican, 33% democratic.

Bush has really changed a lot of minds in the Army. In addition to the repeated deployments to a hopeless, bloody quagmire, they didn't like Bush trying to cut combat pay & basic pay and the underfunding of veterans' hospitals.

I have noticed with some dismay that the most gung-ho, warmongering assholes are in rear echelon units (80-90% of the military).

I had a lot of friends in the USAF too but I think it was ate up with republicans. Keep working on your friends and maybe change some opinions. Stay safe!

18. Here is an encouraging statistic
Edited on Sun Oct-14-07 10:14 AM by ProSense
These cultural themes are the root of everything Republicans do. That is why Rush Limbaugh is desperate to dismiss anti-war soldiers as "phony soldiers," why they always reserve their most vicious attacks for Democratic war veterans like Wes Clark, Jack Murtha and John Kerry; and why they are petrified of facts showing that an astounding 40% of military contributions are going to Democrats, with the largest GOP amounts going to anti-war candidate Ron Paul. The personality contest which Matthews described -- of the weakling loser traitor Democrats vs. the tough pro-military Republicans -- is all they have.

19. It's because of AFN's mission
Congress has charged the AFRTS (which is, of course, pronounced "a-farts") with providing the soldier stationed overseas with a radio and television "experience" like he or she would have received "back home." If it's popular in the US, they try to get it on AFRTS...and, unfortunately, OxyRush is popular.

http://myafn.dodmedia.osd.mil/afnradio.aspx is their programming schedule. Talk about a mishmash!
