2. That's just PC nonsense.
Everyone who wishes to be successful in America should learn English. There is absolutely no good reason not to.

My Vietnamese colleagues at work laugh at the notion of people who want to come here and avoid the language. It is incomprehensible to them.

I'm all for multi-lingualism, as long as English is one of the languages.

3. yeah, myself as well... I'm am not, however, for legislation mandating

a single 'official' language, just like I'm not for mandating an official religion.

And as far as the 'nonsense' goes, I beg to differ. Most of these folks adamantly pushing English as an 'official' language are just too ignorant and intellectually lazy to take the time to learn a second language, much less a third or fourth or fifth.

4. Oh, yeah, I am against legislation as well - it would be meaningless for one thing...
But I think that history has shown us that language is one of the lowest common denominators hold a people together.

I think it is a wonderful thing to learn another language - I took four years of Spanish and used to be pretty fluent in it - but I don't get much chance to speak it.

7. Move down to South Florida.
You'll speak Spanish more than you will English.

5. Will we have language police like in Baltic states?
My friend is from Latvia. They are working hard there to eradicate remnants of Russian language.
Store clerks can be fined for not speaking proper Latvian. As well as there is a talk about doing random spot checks on the street.

I strongly object for government declaring a particular language to be official. If is just the start of the whole string of absurdities that can follow from that legislation.

6. Homogenizing the population
One of the great things about this country is the diversity that keeps any ethnic group from completely dictating how people should behave.
Certain reactionary elements in this country feel what little power they have slipping away and are making a last-ditch attempt to turn the US into a mono-cultural tribal state.
