Help me out. Why are there so many people in GD

who rarely post in the lounge????

I mean it's a fun place to get away from the sometimes all too serious GD discussion.

I like all parts of DU although I admit I don't post everywhere.

I used to post here more often in GD

So just a question for the GD audience...

I go over there all the time, but always feel like a tourist. I can't keep track of who's dating whom, who married whom, who pissed off whom, etc. It's always like walking in on a party in full swing.

Those were the days. Back then the "No Sex Threads" sticky waved like a banner across the top of the forum. We all viewed it as a talisman to our brilliant (read: drunken) posting abilities. :rofl: I think flame wars were almost as common in the Lounge then as in GD. We were crabby and it was even filtering into the sacred forum that is the DU Lounge. :scared:

Author's note: This was before the force that is California Peggy swept into the Lounge. If ever there was an antithesis of crabby it is she.

I don't post much anywhere but I mainly lurk in GD because I don't get a lot of the inside jokes. When I do post in the Lounge, it seems like you have to be part of the "in-crowd" or some clique to even get a response.

I enjoy stumbling in to the lounge from time to time, but not knowing who is feuding with whom is just too much to try to ascertain. I know I have posted in seemingly innocent threads but I found out later were mean spirited "inside joke" threads. I can't keep up with it. I don't really know anyone in the lounge, either.

that it is cliquish. Watch carefully when someone new posts something in the lounge and see how many responses they get.

People don't necessarily expect to find friends in GD but the lounge has an atmosphere of friendliness that "outsiders" see and feel left out of.

Just my 2cents worth.

Nowadays, GD is a free-for-all and The Lounge is - generally speaking (but not always) - a bandwidth-wasting, puerile, scatological joke. The GD forum is nowhere near as serious as it was in 2001, for example. However, my hat is off to the Mods .. they do manage to keep the fences from being trampled.

I agree there are some pretty loony threads there (not that I've ever been the OP of any :P )

On the other hand, it is the lounge

I've been here since the get-go (lurking in the first week or so of DU, member since 5/2001). The Lounge has changed. In fact, most of that change was by your date-onboard DU of Nov 19th 2005, if your profile is correct. Not a criticism Southpawkicker, just an informed observation. Know what I mean, Vern? :hi:

If my mother dies tomorrow, I'll probably post it on GD. Time was when that kind of post was appropriate to The Lounge. The Lounge is too rowdy now, and that is not necessarily bad. DU needs a high-pressure safety valve (set at about 220 PSI .. the tire pressure of a Boeing 737, BTW!), and it seems to be The Lounge. But, like the old Holiday Inn bars, we do have a fair share of lounge lizards.

I moved my 84 Y/O MIL from the hospital to the rehab facility on Friday. Three staff members there asked if I were her husband! Shit-fire! I really do look 50, or so. Really. Well, maybe.

We were in Atlanta a few years ago.

Staying at the Westin, downtown.

My Mother stopped by on her way to Keeneland to buy some racing stock.

And she decided that we would go to the Sundial and have some drinks. The Sundial is a revolving restaurant on the 73rd floor of the Westin, the tallest restaurant in the Western Hemisphere.

Mom had her regular entourage, maybe 8 or 9 trainers, hangers-on and such. I hadn't seen her in maybe a year.

This place has a dedicated elevator and a hostess at a podium at the foot of the elevator.

Hostess asked us if we had reservations. I told her that we were just going to have some drinks.

Said it would be 5 bucks apiece.

Mom was appalled. I mean, we were talking about 40-50 bucks, here.

Explained to Mom that charge was to keep people from going up and taking space while nursing a cheap beer for an hour.

Mom told her that we were not cheap drinkers, we would probably outspend any ten-top table in the restaurant that night (single-malts and all, you know).

Hostess points to me and asks me how old I was.

I told her.

So she said I am eligible for the Seniors Discount.

Everybody cracked up (I had hair past my shoulder-blades at the time).

Mom (hanging on my arm) said, "What about me? I am his Mother".

Hostess (fully pissed at Mom by this point), "Lady, just because you are the date of a Senior doesn't qualify you for a Senior's discount".

Carded her.

My Mother was 74 at the time.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Since you bring it up...on the whole I find scatological humor wearing in any but small doses, and there's a LOT of it in the Lounge. Not my cup of tea, so I stay away.

I definitely feel like an outsider there. My posts get little or no response. And heaven help anyone from GD who posts in a picture thread. But, to be honest, I found the same thing mentioned by some of the other people on here. It felt like there were a lot inside jokes and it seemed a little hard to 'break into'. Over here, if you want to get some response to your post all you have to do is say "Hillary" or "Fuck smokers" and you can have a 200 post thread (and make the greatest page).

But--some zest went out of it when the all sex-related topics were excluded.

Not that sex is the only interesting thing to talk about. But -- I don't know why, but the only topics that seemed to get posted after that were about pop music, sports, & other stuff I don't follow very closely.

They don't actually have me on ignore, but usually I get no responses to my posts. On GD, or even R/T, I get a comment or two every now and then. In the lounge, nobody knows and nobody cares who I am.

To get attention on DU you have to stir up some shit, say something controversial, brutally attack someone's stupid ideas.

I fear it would be alittle sicker in the FRIST! no I'm Frist! and naked ! forum.

all the disparaging remarks people there make about GD posters? It's kind of this whole high school (self-proclaimed) cool kids table thing they've got going there. It's actually pretty amusing. They consider GD poster as the unwashed masses.

Having said that, I'll still post in there -- largely unnoticed of course, but, post I do.
