Parents Petition School District For Change In Lunch Policy

WILLIAMSPORT, Ohio – The Westfall School District's school lunch policy has some parents hungry for answers.

Parents in the district have started a petition against a lunch policy which allows workers to throw away a student's lunch if they have charged more than $10 to their account, NBC 4 reported.

School officials said that the child does not go hungry, the are simply given a protein bar and a milk instead.

However, at least one parent believes that the policy not only humiliates children whose lunches are taken away from them, but also forces taxpayers to pay for two lunches.

Randall J. Cotner, superintendent of the district, said that he does not see a problem with the policy and he feels the district has gone above and beyond its responsibilities by offering the student an alternative lunch and making a call to the student's parents.

1. Those parents should live in my area
Kids who come up a few CENTS short in my area don't get the lunch, and are given CRACKERS and milk. NO call to the parent (who could give a credit card over the phone to get the kid fed) - Freaking crackers! AND they humiliate the kid in front of their classmates by making a big show of taking the lunch away.

This ain't new folks -- welcome to the wonderful world of *compassionate* America!

3. I always brought snacks into my classroom.
I provided things like graham crackers nd sugar-free drinks, at my own expense. Some of the more aware parents brought healthy snacks and told me to use them as they were needed.

I would offer snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon, because too many kids had flagging energy from lack of food. It would affect their behavior and academic performance.

To be fair, some of this lunchroom policy is the fault of the parents. No matter how many times they are called, no matter how many notes are sent home, some parents take advantage. They dump their children at school, and expect the school to babysit and take care of any other needs that arise as well.

2. They're still forcing milk onto kids in school?

Cow's Milk Carbohydrate intolerance:
75% of all adults are lactose intolerant, while only 20% of European descent are intolerant.

Cow's Milk Protein intolerance:
I don't know the precise statistic other than it's considered the most common food allergy among young kids, even infants.

It's really curious to juxtapose schools' attitudes about this with their attitudes regarding peanut allergies where complete bans have apparently been implemented in some areas.
