Outraged about SCHIP veto? Join Tuesday's DC vigil

If you're outraged about the President's veto of the SCHIP bill being upheld by obstructionist GOP
legislators, there are two things you can do now: 1) call one of the GOP legislators noted in this previous article at 1-800-828-0498 through Families USA, and 2) join other progressives Tuesday in front of the Capitol to raise awareness and urge Congress to support children's health. As a Campaign for America's Future email alert says:

All the groups working for an expanded SCHIP program will be hosting a national vigil in support of children's healthcare tomorrow night at Upper Senate Park, near Metro Station - see coalition flyer for details. We ask your help in sending a strong message to Congress before they vote on the 18th by attending this event. Over the last few weeks, thanks to efforts by many of you, this issue has caught fire with the press and has become the national domestic story.

At this hour more than 260 grassroots events are already planned across the country, and many of you are working the phones as we speak to move recalcitrant Congressional members to override the President. Tomorrow is message day, so send that message in person. Turnout your members, your staff, your family and friends and make this event a statement to the President. Current speakers include:

While I disagree with the motives behind the veto, I'm hoping that this version of SCHIP will die, to be replaced by a version that has a much more egalitarian funding mechanism. Shifting the funding burden to one of the poorest segments in our society via regressive taxation is simply wrong, and downright Republican in nature. The Dems took out their original funding mechanism, cutting subsidies to corporate health care providers, and allowed the 'Pugs to put in this regressive smoking tax. What slays me is how many otherwise liberal people just eat it up because it penalizes those nasty smokers some more. So much for fair play:eyes:
