Is crime worse under Democratic or Republican Administrations?
Is there a difference in crime depending on party in charge?

1. My sense tells me yes
the BBC found that suicides went up with conservatives governments

My sense is hardening economic conditions lead to higher crime

But I have not seen a definite study. So my instinct and actual statistics may be different

3. Depends on what you mean by "worse",
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 10:47 PM by Rabrrrrrr
but the answer to your question, no matter by what criteria one is measuring "worse", is "yes - it is worse under Republican administrations".

The economy is always worse;
unemployment is always worse;
meanness and personal attack become normative in government, and thus in civil life;
racial tensions are worse;
anything that can possibly divide people is heightened (that is, worse);
the divide between rich and poor is worse (it's bigger).

So whether one means "are the types of crimes worse" or "Is the number of crimes worse" or "is the rate of crime worse" or "is the violence in crimes worse" and so forth, the answer is "yes".

Wherever there is hopelessness and an inability to feed oneself, there is crime - violent and petty crimes.

Wherever there is unchecked growth of wealth and a culture of meanness, greed, social darwinism, unregulated government and corporations, cronyism, nepotism, and a culture of covering up for friends, there is crime - white collar, environmental, and crimes against humanity, and crimes committed by government officials (99% of which are, of course, Republicans)

4. Crime is kind of a wide open space.
An administration's policies that would have any effect on local crime rates take a while to be implemented.

As bad as this administration is, I don't think you can pin any crime rates to him, or to Clinton, or Bush Sr...

Now, you criminalize drug use to a point worse than violent crime, or create situations where people lose their jobs and it creates some problems that can turn into crimes.

5. Yes, because Democrats seem to have a conscience and boundaries.
Republicans don't.

6. Crime rates have statistical anomolies which coincide with the population census
...which takes place every ten years. Population growth, shifts, changes, dencity, immigration, births, deaths as well as crime reporting by the police, all have an affect on the crime rates. Then you couple that with the fact that census counts are done only during the years which begin each decade (i.e. 1990, 2000, 2010, etc.) and you can easily see how crime rates can become a political issue. Judge for yourself:

7. As the poor get poorer...
as always happens when Republicans run things for their own private benefit and class wars intensify, I think it follows that some people being thus squeezed by "the system" will give up and turn to crime rather than flip hamburgers day after day.

8. Crime rates go up when economy is bad
and this economy is bad for most of us except the uber rich - I think crime rates were down under Clinton because economy was good for everyone - or most everyone
