CLEAR CHANNEL SILENCES PROGRESSIVE TALK IN SAN DIEGO
Submitted by barbaracummings on Tue, 2007-10-16 23:24. Media

We heard the rumors back in August. Our only progressive voice KLSD 1360 would be silenced forever. Clear Channel claimed that the 6th largest market in the country could not find enough sponsors to support one independent talk station. Facts notwithstanding that Clear Channel never put any money into promotion or advertising. For 3 years we had two scraggley billboards that said BUSH BASHERS WELCOME. This never was chosen by listeners, nor did any of us feel comfortable with it.

Many fans rallyed and began a campign to find sponsors, to expand the base. We wrote, called and faxed locally and to Clear channel in San Antonio. We got indications that our full court press (to use a basketball metaphor!) was working. We worked harder. One huge rally on a Friday morning, then another just to show how sincere we were, how much we would sacrafice to keep our station. Petition drives were on line and taken all over town to any and every event.

Still, the rumors persisted. We had a planning meeting, dozens showed up right after work. We had another rally on Friday morning at ^AM. Almost 3oo showed up. The GM of the station came out and spoke to us, told us nothing had been decided, that we were having an effect. Imagine our chagrin when on Saturday morning the local paper carried an article about the new 1360 Sports Talk station that would soon kick off.

The new format will be sports talk radio. It will be the third sports talk station in San Diego. It has failed before. It will undoubetly fail now. too.

Many of us fervently believe that this is a political move in a political year, designed to disrupt us. This is about a virtual Clear Channel monopoly. This is about FCC regs which allow this sort of consolidation and supression of diverse radio talk. There are 2 more FCC meetings this year and we will have some representation there.

There is a group in Madison, WI, www.nonstopradio.com that has followed the Clear Channel business model of flipping progressive talk all across the country. Watch out, it may be coming to your neighborhood.

Here is a link to our last rally. http://www.casualtyfilms.com/

1. I saw this from Sign On San Diego
What is this station? The Air America Network, currently heard on 1360, will be moved to HD Radio at 105.3-3.

4. It's a High Definition Digital Radio Station ........ catch is .....
you have to have a 'HD Radio' to get the broadcasts. It's clear AM radio in FM quality so to speak. But again .... you have to have an HD Radio to get the broadcast. New technology ..... think only a few BMW's and Jags have them installed so far. You can pick one up for your car at Circuit City - Best Buy etc... etc... sigh ...... point being don't bother dialing in the new station on your analog radio in your car .... you won't find the station. Clear Chanel sucks for doing this. Peace.

7. Pretty much sums it up.
You can get an HD Radio to plug into your wall (clock radio type) not sure they have hand held portable ones out there yet? The major retailers only started puting limited types on their shelves in like April of this year. Course if any of this technology catches on it'll be a while .... yea crafty ....

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." George Bush ....

Peace.

12. Just the facts Sargent Friday just the facts ...... ?
Feel like I just dropped into a game of 'who's on first' (Abbott and Costello) with you there for just a moment ... ;) .... ummm I take it your birthday has already passed and someone owes you some money for it? Checks in the mail? Or ... ummm allocate the money to cover .... what? And the on-line san diego thingy .... I presume you were referring to the 1360 radio station and the organizing people should have kept you abreast of the situation? Feel free to set me strait on any or none of the above, just my curious mind clicking about.

Anyway I'm personally gonna really miss 1360 till I get a HD radio for my truck. I commute between L.A. and Diego quite a bit now and 1360 kept me sane when entering the Diego area and the outskirts. Loved 'The Rant' on Saturday mornings with Scooter, Stacey Taylor show in the mornings, Randi, etc... etc...

Up in L.A. it's 1050 AM on the dial ... Air America programing ... liked the 1360 format better. Peace.

5. HD radio ....
....... consumers must upgrade to a new receiver in order to receive the digital broadcasts. Brand name HD Radio receivers are available for home and car at major consumer electronics chains, online and through regional stores. -snip-

There is a general disinterest amongst consumers in the new Digital HD Radio. According to a survey by Bridge Ratings, when asked the question, "Would you buy an HD radio in the next two months?" only 1.0% responded "yes". Some engineers have also expressed distrust or dislike of the new system. -snip-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD-Radio

See post #4 in this thread also. Talk about a way to cut the listening audience down a bit .... Just another way to silence our voices. Sigh .... Peace.

15. Thanks for the link.
I used to work for Cheap Channel, too. They bought my station and combined it with two others, with a sales staff that handled all three stations. After a year, things went sour. The sales staff ignored us, we were denied any money for promotions, we couldn't even buy reels of tape.

All they were concerned about was pimping Howard Stern on the classic rock station.

23. Here's a wiki about Bain
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bain_Capital

"Bain Capital LLC is a Boston, Massachusetts-based private equity firm founded in 1984 by Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts, and two other partners from the consulting firm Bain & Company: T. Coleman Andrews III and Eric Kriss. Bain Capital was originally conceived as a combined equity start-up and leveraged buyout fund, an innovative strategy at the time.
(...)
On November 16, 2006, Clear Channel Communications agreed to be acquired by Bain Capital and Thomas Lee Partners for nearly $19 billion."

17. I know this sounds funny but CC did this in Charleston, SC a couple of years ago.
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 10:54 PM by Skip Intro
They never advertised the station. The signal strength was really weak. But AA was here, for a few months. No promotion locally. No media. CC slapped it up there for just a short time, then took it away. It was a bs effort all the way. They eventually played a simulcast from one of thier other local stations of elevator music. And AA was gone.

I was all ready for a push. I wanted a bumpersticker badly. I wanted to blast Randi in rush hour traffic.

Clear Channel did that here. Being SC, and a while ago, I can see why there was little mention. But to see CC doing this kinda thing, its nothing new.

21. Strange how these progressive stations always turn into SPORTS stations
Is it because they know that sports format stations are oversaturating the market and will fail eventually?

Then Clear Channel or someone else can come in and buy the station for a song, and make it a conservative talk format.
