The window on a possible Gore campaign is closing very quickly.

I agree that he's left it open a crack, but right now the reasons for not running are pretty compelling, if you're Al Gore. First and foremost, there's no guarantee he'd get the nom, which would be kind of humiliating. He'd enter the nomination race in second or third place and, if the current polling has any meaning at all, likely finish there. Second, I think you'd see an unprecedented wave of corporate and corporate-media opposition to his candidacy; Gore represents a very real threat to Business As Usual in the military, healthcare and energy sectors, and I don't see those industries giving up their predominance without a fight. Gore would have to expect 2000 all over again from the media; they're already gearing up to treat any potential Gore campaign as a weird manifestation of tree-huggery gone mad. Third, he'd absolutely have to devise fund-raising methods that were radically different from the current form of legalized bribery, or he'd have no credibility at all. That means no PACs, no lobbyist money, no thousand dollar a plate fundraisers. Everything would have to come from individuals, in small dollar amounts. It could be done (I'd give the max, immediately), but it wouldn't be easy. Fourth, before he announced he'd have to have a plan for chopping Hillary off at the knees, otherwise he'd be wasting his time. I'm not sure Al's got the political killer instinct, frankly, to play it that way. Long story short, if he doesn't declare by Halloween, stick a big-ass fork in him. He ain't running.

If that is so true, then why the hell do you and all your buddies care so much?

This tune is getting tiresome.

I've never seen so much Kool-Aid swilling at DU before! What the hell is going on??

12. It doesn't surprise me that you cannot understand my post...
Since you clearly don't know the difference between "I am not running" and "I currently have no plans to run". A thesaurus can be your very best friend if only you would give it a chance.

3. How come when it's "Gore's not running," it's blah blah /kool aid, but when it's "Gore's running! I
know this because he sneezed a certain way!" it's not?

10. Sneezed?
I have no idea what you are talking about.

When Gore says he isn't running, instead of "I currently have no plans" and other such verbalizations, then I will believe he is not running. He knows how the English language works, and he is using that knowledge.

Sneezed? Puhleeeeez. Don't make things up.

14. Most people are.
I do software development and support for a living, and it's surprising how many people are very mouse-oriented.

And people seem to be one or the other, primarily. I'm a pretty even split, but I think it comes with the job. :)

4. This was being discussed on television the other night.
I wasn't sitting there watching it, so I missed a lot of the conversation, but they were trying to determine at what point it really would be too late for Gore to enter if he chose to do so.

They mentioned money would not be an issue for him, if he decided to run, it would be there.

Personally, I wish he'd just flat out say "I'm running!" or "I'm not going to do it, folks. This is a 100% sure thing, I am not going to run in 2008." That would put an end to all the speculation. Since he hasn't done that, he's either planning on announcing, or he's very inconsiderate by allowing so many people to spend their time and money trying to get him to run.

He should, basically, sh!t or get off the pot.

6. I think he most likely still hasn't decided.
It's a tough choice, even if you really want the job--which he may not.

8. I suspect this is the case.
He really doesn't want to run, because he knows what to expect, but at the same time he's under a lot of pressure from people he respects to run.

Probably not a position to be envious of.

16. I've been advocating a Gore run for a long time, and I agree.
He's got a few more weeks. Beyond that, I think it's not going to happen.

That's not an emotional statement on whether or not I want him to run- that's based upon my ability to read a calendar.

Doesn't matter whether you support a Gore run or not. Deadlines are deadlines.

22. Though there will be some who hope for a brokered convention...
A rare occurrence where a compelling reason exists for delegates to abandon their commitment to said candidate, and go with another.

I'm not suggesting it.

But others will.

It will keep some Al Gore dreamers going till August in Denver - it is only after someone else comes out of Denver with the nod --- that they will finally let go.

And BTW, I was an Al Gore dreamer till the past few days...time to let go (for me anyway).

20. 1. There is no guarantee anyone will get the nomination, however
I believe with his global stature and our national standing it's the American People that will feel the pressure of not being humiliated.

2. Current polling is just that, current, unless of course you're speaking of Current Television.:)

3. No doubt, there will be fierce opposition from the corporate media, however, 2008 isn't 2000, the American People are much more aware of media malfeasance, not just from the "War Against Gore" period prior to the selection of 2000 but also from events ever since such as the cheer leading to war with Iraq and the betrayal of our own covert CIA agent and her company overseas. There are also cracks opening up in the corporate media regarding the reporting of the treatment they gave Al Gore, ie; Vanity Fair and even an exchange on FAUX News, which I posted a thread on, thus the cat to some degree is already out of the bag. Also, the Internet is stronger today than it was in 2000, to help defend him against media slanders and I believe Al Gore has an inherent advantage unlike any other political leader with the Internet from his legislative work in opening it up for the American People, and thus transforming the way we get information.

4. I believe money will be the least of Al's problems, he isn't hurting for money, and could possibly finance his own campaign. I believe the people will come out of the wood work to donate. As well as Howard Dean did on raising money from the Internet, I believe Al Gore could easily surpass it.

5. Al Gore doesn't have to chop anybody off at the knees, just be him self, but if you don't believe he has the political killer instinct, check with Ross Perot. Should Al decide to run, it will be because he sincerely believes that is the best hope to save life as we know it, to fight for the American People's Constitutional rights which have been trampled, and to right the mess we're in overseas, among other vital issues and there will no tiptoeing through the tulips. "The Assault on Reason" will give many people an unfiltered insight as to his character and love for our democratic republic.

6. While Global Warming was pretty much ignored by the media in 2000, even when Al spoke about it, that's not the case today, that issue has become too big for them to hide. The South and West are going through devastating, record breaking droughts and more people are waking up to the this looming catastrophe every day, thus Al Gore's popularity will only go up as a result. November 5th one of the morning programs will spend that week literally "Going to the end of the World" Antarctica to the Amazon, we'll see how that plays out.
