Religious Organizations Call For Override Of Bush's S-CHIP Veto
Override Presidential Veto of S-CHIP, Interfaith Letter

Updated: 10/11/2007

Dear Member of Congress,

Our many faith traditions teach us to care for those who are in need of healing, especially children and those in greatest need. The Christian scriptures portray Jesus as a healer who showed particular compassion for the needs of children. The Hebrew scriptures call us to ensure a balm of healing for the poor through the words of the Prophet Jeremiah (8:22) and the Qur’an says of the Lord’s ministry: When I am sick, then He restores me to health (26:80). We believe we must act in accord with callings of our faith by protecting children, which includes providing for their health and well-being.

We the undersigned religious organizations begin by offering our deepest thanks and appreciation to those Senators and Representatives who have already voted to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Children are a sacred gift and we cannot overstate the value of providing health care to those in greatest need, and SCHIP does just that. We affirm your principled stand on behalf of poor children and urge you continue this commitment by both voting to override President Bush’s veto of the SCHIP compromise bill (H.R. 976) and by urging your colleagues to join you in this principled vote.

To those of you who have thus far opposed this bill, we ask you to prayerfully reconsider this decision. By every measure, SCHIP has been a strong bipartisan success. As a program passed by a Democratic President and Republican Congress, with broad support among state governors of both parties, SCHIP participants demonstrate improved health outcomes and performance in school, while overall the program has, in the past 10 years, decreased the number of uninsured children by one-third.

*snip*

We ask you to join Sen. Hatch and scores of others by voting to override President Bush’s veto and thus guaranteeing health insurance coverage to millions of our nation’s vulnerable children. The health of millions of poor children should not be sacrificed at the tip of the President’s pen. We in the faith community thank you for your prayerful consideration of this upcoming vote.

Sincerely,

- Hmmm.... Glaringly absent from the list are the Southern Baptists and those Assembly Evangelical folks. But then I s'pose they're having a hard time understanding how to reach out to the kids. Now that Ted has left to regain his manhood. He was big with the kids. But who wants sick kids and their parents in a congregation anyway? I mean how much money can they make off a family that has a really sick kid? And they might actually start ASKING THEM for money. No, no. It'd be better and let God decide who lives or dies. And it probably won't make the http://www.barna.org/FlexPage.aspx?Page=BarnaUpdate&BarnaUpdateID=280">youth religious recruitment tank any worse than it already is now.....

6. Finally....
...a time and place where the religions might have a POSITIVE impact in someone's life, instead of spending all their efforts on getting into our personal business in the bedroom.

- Who knew???

4. I find it amazing
That all these GOOD CHRISTIAN members of Congress need to be "reminded" of one of the most important messages in the Bible.

7. Not when you consider....
....that most probably never heard of it before now.

These Conservative Congressional Christinista's don't do a lot of that "love each other stuff" of the NT. They're more into the "rock hard" biblical realities of Leviticus......

9. I find it difficult to believe
That people raised in the Christian world didn't know BOTH the OT and the NT.

I was raised Presbyterian and BOTH books were given equal weight, despite the VERY different philosophies.

It's probably why I'm a "rabid atheist" today.
:D

10. Anyone who has ever actually read it....
...would most likely have to end up an atheist.

Or delusional....

And as an "authorized" PK, I approve of this message....

5. You think a petition from a bunch of weakling religious whiners is going to affect Der Bushler?
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 05:19 PM by tom_paine
Then you don't know Der Bushler.

"How many divisions does the Pope have?"

8. Der Bushler, is and has always been beyond reach....
...and the letter wasn't intended him, he can barely read as it is. It was intended for his sycophants that remain in Congress under the delusion that they still have a chance at retaining their office.

I'm just glad that the "weak sisters" of the religious landscape in this country, finally found that they still had some the cajones and chose to speak out.
