All hell's going to break lose when the wingnuts learn that Denny and a lot of his GOP cronies have been selling their country for cash to foreign powers.

This will make ABSCAM look like an icecream and cake party.

13. Actually, this is not good if what he's doing is setting up an incumbent for the next election
I'm beginning to wonder if this rash of resignations isn't becoming part of the Publican strategy for 2008. Afaik, this is why there's so much pressure on Larry Craig to give up his seat now: his Repub governor will appoint another Repub to fill his seat.

They've found yet another way to subvert the normal electoral process.

who else can you think of ? Or more importantly, are there any resigning who are not leaving early?

pretty much what I have been thinking though its possible Hastert has a medical reason that he has not disclosed I am leaning more towards his wanting to set it up so a republican has more of a sure thing to hold the seat.
Perhaps then its time the rules on appointing a successor and or replacement for a senator are reviewed and appointments or special elections should only be held due to the death and or conviction of a senator if they have less than 13 months before their term ends and not because of their choosing to resign in order that a party member be appointed to improve the odds of their party holding the seat.

17. TPM 2007.08.14: Denny's Goin' Home
Denny's Goin' Home
By Paul Kiel - August 14, 2007
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/003922.php

CQ reports that former-Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) is serving his last term in Congress:

After less than a year as a rank-and-file House member, former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert is expected to call an end to a political career that made him the longest serving Republican Speaker in the history of the House of Representatives.

Several Illinois newspapers, including the Aurora Beacon News and the Chicago Tribune, reported Tuesday that the Illinois Republican has scheduled a Friday announcement on the steps of the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville, Ill. While Hastert aides are refusing to discuss what he plans to say, he is expected to announce that he will not run for a 12th term in 2008, according to Republican sources.

There will be some who'll remember Hastert mainly as ex-Majority Leader Tom DeLay's (R-TX) plaything.

But we here at TPMmuckraker prefer to remember him for his even lower moments, such as convening Republican leaders after the Mark Foley scandal broke to get their stories straight for the press.

106. Oooohhh! That's juicy!
I don't put ANYTHING past ANY of these republicans.

I have a general question: Are there that many men in the general population who have man-on-man sex like the married republicans do? Republicans call it "an abomination", but they all seem to do it!

I really don't care who has sex with who....it's their own damned business. But it sure seems like there's been a whole world going on that I didn't know about, with married men and other men/boys/male prostitutes. Do most men do this and I'm just clueless?

Very interesting, I don't think he is retiring merely to have more time with the family for some reason. When there is no promotion in store that usually means something not so good brewing in the background whenever anyone resigns without finishing their term.

I'm concerned that there seems to be a "going quietly in the night movement" afoot for the ethics violations and corruption charges.

Ethics has already floated a trial balloon leak on not pursuing Domenici because of his "reported" brain disorder.

51. Please support John Laesch
www.john08.com

John ran against Hastert in 06 - he did pretty well - he is a great progressive - veteran and anyone who has a few extra bucks should send him some

I think Hastert might be doing this to set up the special election - to have an incumbent in place

Interesting I had read somewhere that if he had retired as Speaker his retirement payment would have been greater.....

99. With the resolution against the Armenian genocide (by the Turks) making its way
through the house, my guess is that Hastert's benefactors in Turkey are looking for blood. They pay him a helluvalot of money to keep our government infiltrated with drug dealers and enablers, and to keep their involvement quiet.

I sure hope this means that Sibel Edmonds is about to be set free to tell the truth.

My guess is, when Sibel said that there were people on BOTH sides of the aisle taking money from the Turkish arms & drug dealers, they were talking about the Billy Boy Big Dog. That sure wouldn't look good for hillary. But the connections to Mena, Arkansas are too telling.

115. It would be great if this whole thing blew wide open...

but it may likely get covered up in the same way that the "Arkansas Project" worked to cover up the much deeper problem at Mena.

95. Fun As This Announcement is, Ma'am
It is probably not related to any particular scandal or malfeasance, but only an attempt to get a leg up for a Republican successor to his seat. This reptile's district is not so secure for the enemy as it once was, bu a psecial election will probably be dominated by Republican machine turn out, and thus give someone a whiff of incumbency in the up-coming general election, when wider turn-out would make a purely open seat much harder for the enemy to hold.

118. Right you are, Sir!
State Senator Lauzen is considered the frontrunner GOP just because of name recognition. But there is also the mayor from Geneva, Kevin Burns, who I think may be a dark horse in this race. Both are (R) but Kevin Burns has a greater sense of community and concern for the welfare of the people than any R I have met - if we are to have Republican representation, I wouldn't mind him at all.

I don't think our very red district is going to elect a Democrat anytime soon. Mr. Hastert is quite popular here despite all the scandals.
