Did CBS scrub their Iran-Plame story?-Larisa Alexandrovna
Did CBS scrub their Iran-Plame story?

If you watched the 60 Minutes Interview this evening, you will note that the entire Iran section is missing. Now, why would something this important simply go missing after CBS had already advanced it to the press as part of their build-up to the interview? Did the story get scrubbed? If so, why? Are we not owed some answers?

4. As Larisa Alexandrovna says herself, the story is the story.
There are the stark, sordid facts.

And then there is what happened to the facts, when they were presented, and what happened to the presenter.

Just when the story, uncredited, gets hyped as this week's 60 Minutes sizzle, suddenly the sizzle is buried.

The story about the story just got more interesting.

My dream: Morley Safer interviewing Larisa in her new place (cleanly organized and well-lit) about how her reporting about this had been impeded. The players, and their tactics.

It won't happen on 60 Minutes. But by god, if we care and pay attention, it will happen somewhere.

7. Dan Rather!
Totally!

Thank you for jogging my mind with Mike Wallace, who would be great outside the CBS bubble.

Rather.

9. Details, details. Haha.
Well I did ride my mountain bike 30 miles this afternoon. With 3500 feet in elevation gain.

But yes, Dan Rather.

By the way, I really like that Don't Tase Me Bro graphic. Even if it is tasteless. :)

10. That's lots of up and down on a bicycle.
Feels good, doesn't it?

Thanks.

And thanks for being one of the people who'd appreciate the tasteless meta-irony of the graphic.

28. One only has to read this Salon article on Rather to understand what happened:
Dan Rather stands by his story

His lawsuit will attempt to show that CBS tried to suppress the report on Bush's National Guard Service and the Abu Ghraib abuses.

By Sidney Blumenthal

Sept. 27, 2007 | Dan Rather's complaint against CBS and Viacom, its parent company, filed in New York state court on Sept. 19 and seeking $70 million in damages for his wrongful dismissal as "CBS Evening News" anchor, has aroused hoots of derision from a host of commentators. They've said that the former anchor is "sad," "pathetic," "a loser," on an "ego" trip and engaged in a mad gesture "no sane person" would do, and that "no one in his right mind would keep insisting that those phony documents are real and that the Bush National Guard story is true."

-snip

Rather believed that the panel would conduct a fair-minded inquiry. But he learned that neither he nor Mapes would be allowed to cross-examine witnesses. They heard from some researchers on the "60 Minutes II" staff that before they had been questioned, a CBS executive had told them that they should feel free to pin all blame on Rather and Mapes. CBS had told Rather to cease investigating the story and had even hired a private investigator of its own, Erik Rigler. Rather and Mapes discovered that Rigler's investigation had uncovered corroboration for their story. Rather's complaint states that "after following all the leads given to him by Ms. Mapes, he (Rigler) was of the opinion that the Killian Documents were most likely authentic, and that the underlying story was certainly accurate." But rather than probing Rigler on his findings, the panel, to the extent its lawyers questioned him in a single telephone call, "appeared more interested whether Mr. Rigler had uncovered derogatory information concerning Mr. Rather or Ms. Mapes, as to which he had no information," according to the Rather complaint. Rigler's report was suppressed, never presented to the panel, and remains suppressed by CBS. Nor did the panel fully question James Pierce, the handwriting expert consulted by "60 Minutes" who insisted that the signature on the documents was surely Killian's.

-snip

As the panel called witnesses, Sumner Redstone, CEO of Viacom (CBS's owner), declared his interest in the 2004 election. "I look at the election from what's good for Viacom. I vote for what's good for Viacom. I vote, today, Viacom," he said. In fact, Viacom had a number of crucial issues before the Federal Communications Commission, including loosening media ownership rules. "I don't want to denigrate Kerry," said Redstone, "but from a Viacom standpoint, the election of a Republican administration is a better deal. Because the Republican administration has stood for many things we believe in, deregulation and so on. The Democrats are not bad people ... But from a Viacom standpoint, we believe the election of a Republican administration is better for our company."

8. Valerie Plame chat Monday at FireDogLake
kpete asked:

"Did CBS scrub their Iran-Plame story?

Now, why would something this important simply go missing after CBS had already advanced it to the press as part of their build-up to the interview? Did the story get scrubbed? If so, why? Ask Valerie, herself, tomorrow when she live chats at www.FireDogLake.com for two hours from 10:30am to 12:30pm Pacific Time. The questions and answers should be much more revealing than CBS's interview.

12. Would not surprise me if execs killed the story
We have heard the stories from other media anchors (Chris Matthews) about the pressure the bush administration exudes on the executives not to run anything criticizing bush. Remember this is the same network that got rid of Dan Rather.

Funny thing is the repugnants and trolls on the web talk about a "Liberal Media Bias". I don't see it that way at all. We are in a war and bush has certain powers to control what is said in the media during wartime.

Here's an example of bush breaking the propaganda law....

The CBS that made "Rather" a verb, as in "to be Rathered."

16. Once again, Katie Courics "contempt" was revolting....She kept saying to Wilson with a scowl on her
face "Your still seathing, your still seathing".... Well, no shit Katie, ofcourse he's "still seathing"!!! We should all still be seathing after what the Bush Cheney administration did to Wilson and outing Valerie Plame and Brewster Jennings! I'm surprised that when people are being treated with such contempt by Katie Couric that they can avoid telling her to shove it or call out her bias and her stupidity. Wilson was calm and looked at her like she was an idiot - "ofcourse I'm still seathing - it violated National Security"...

Duh...and yet Katie Couric sits there with her scowl, her glare acting as if "how dare Wilson and Plame make the suggestions they do"....

Cheney: US will not let Iran go nuclear

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071022/ap_on_go_pr_wh/cheney

LEESBURG, Va. - The United States and other nations will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.
"Our country, and the entire international community, cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its grandest ambitions," Cheney said in a speech to the Washington Institute for Near East Studies.

He said Iran's efforts to pursue technology that would allow them to build a nuclear weapon are obvious and that "the regime continues to practice delay and deceit in an obvious effort to buy time."

If Iran continues on its current course, Cheney said the U.S. and other nations are "prepared to impose serious consequences." The vice president made no specific reference to military action.

"We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon," he said.

How could CBS possibly air this......

<snip>

Speaking under strict confidentiality, intelligence officials revealed heretofore unreported elements of Plame's work. Their accounts suggest that Plame's outing was more serious than has previously been reported and carries grave implications for U.S. national security and its ability to monitor Iran's burgeoning nuclear program.
