NASA Sits on Air Safety Survey

By RITA BEAMISH, Associated Press Writer

Monday, October 22, 2007
(10-22) 07:06 PDT MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. (AP) --

Anxious to avoid upsetting air travelers, NASA is withholding results from an unprecedented national survey of pilots that found safety problems like near collisions and runway interference occur far more frequently than the government previously recognized.

NASA gathered the information under an $8.5 million safety project, through telephone interviews with roughly 24,000 commercial and general aviation pilots over nearly four years. Since ending the interviews at the beginning of 2005 and shutting down the project completely more than one year ago, the space agency has refused to divulge the results publicly.

Just last week, NASA ordered the contractor that conducted the survey to purge all related data from its computers.

The Associated Press learned about the NASA results from one person familiar with the survey who spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to discuss them.

8. "findings could damage the public's confidence in airlines and affect airline profits"
Oh, well, it's OK then. As long as profits are maintained.

while looking at her watch...right on time.

So is this. Just about what you'd expect when you'd expect in our totalitarian transition.

Worse than the last obvious data purges (such as the terrorism report of 2003 and I am sure a dzoen others I cannot recall instantly) but better than the ones to come.

Yeah,it's obvious. Because with every day the Bushies realize just HOW unchecked by the Systems of Checks and Balances or the Imperial Subjects of Amerika, they really ARE.

Sometimes you just have to laugh in the shadow of something horrific rising.

10. Purging information collected on the taxpayers' dime is probably illegal...
Would be interesting to see their justification for erasing all the years of data collection paid for by taxpayers.

15. I'm curious if this would stop more people from flying
My guess it would have minimal impact. I'm not going to bother digging up the actual figures and doing the math, but the number of people who die in plane crashes compared to those who don't has to be extraordinarily small.
