1. I don't know much about CA but have a sister in Mission Viejo
and one in Oceanside. I talked to both yesterday and they were okay. Can you give me an idea of where Monterey is? It's south of San Fran, right?

17. That's a great map, but CA is so freakin' big, I can't grasp the scale.
Like how far is Lake Forest from those closest red pins?

25. Woah! Ok, that's really close. (Co-workers are out there!)
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 06:54 PM by soothsayer
On edit: one co-worker lost his apt complex, one was able to drive by his neighborhood see his house still standing (tho others in the neighborhood were sadly gone), one stayed overnight at Qualcomm and said it was great with plenty of food, water, blankets, cots easily available. Lots of support for pets, too. They said, "Thanks, San Diego. If anyone has a chance, take something down to Qualcomm. The cars were streaming in when we left; mostly people being evacuated from the south."

Another reported lots of smoke and ash (pools are black and filled with leaves/ash). Cable has been lost but so far power is holding in the area. Officials are worried about the power supply because they had to shut down the main lines into the county.

12. Mission Viejo, being a completely built up community doesn't
contain or isn't very close to the edge of large wilderness areas that are on fire. It's on the other side of the hill from the Santiago Canyon fire.

14. Thank you; I've been there, and know that like other properties
in CA, should one house catch, it'd be a bad scene.

I live in that square on your map. It was really polluted yesterday, but today is pretty clear.

22. thanks
CNN scared the crap out of me with their fire-breathing monster map.

My family is in Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and Valley Center, and have been evacuated. I'm a bit squirrelly today.

9. That's beyond "serious"...
...and if the flames do reach Santa Cruz, the results are unimaginable. There are many homes, just like in Malibu, that are "creatively built" (as in "not safe locations").

16. CNN exaggerates
We're on "red alert" status, but that's typical for this time of year.

There's absolutely no chance of the SoCal fires spreading up here.
