Children are victims of abuse in Iraqi prisons

BAGHDAD, 25 October 2007 (IRIN) - Iraqi NGOs have raised concerns about the condition of children in local prisons, saying they are abused and tortured during interrogation.

..............

“Children are being treated as adults in Iraqi prisons and our investigations have shown that they are being abused and tortured,” said Khalid Rabia’a, a spokesman for the Prisoners’ Association for Justice (PAJ).

“Our investigation started after families brought their five sons to our organisation looking for psychological help for their children who were recently released from prison, and what we found out was shocking,” Rabia’a added.

..............

“The five children showed signs of torture all over their bodies. Three had marks of cigarettes burns over their legs and one couldn’t speak as the shock sessions affected his conversation,” Rabia’a said. “It is against international law that protects children and we call for interventions in all Iraqi prisons to save the lives of these children.”

3. The are children...
children...

I have no words to describe the depraved evil it takes
to torture a child. Torture of the innocent.

4. Especially
since in America we go to jail if someone finds out a child has been spanked.

6. Sadly, its here too ...
IIRC, this scandal is what REALLY gave shock value to the Abu Ghraib story. Somehow the focus was changed, especially after watching the "suit" handcuffed to a briefcase walking the damming photos to Congress, it was priceless. Also, I recall reading recent reports that suggests children and family members of captured terras were tortured. More of our torture policies?

GAO study reveals boot camp 'nightmare'

The first federal inquiry into boot camps and wilderness programs for troubled teens cataloged 1,619 incidents of abuse in 33 states in 2005, a congressional investigation out today reveals.

The study, by the Government Accountability Office, also looked at a sample of 10 deaths since 1990 and found untrained staff, inadequate food or reckless operations were factors. In half of those cases, the teens died of dehydration or heat exhaustion, the GAO says.

"No government agency is able to say how many children have died at boot camps or wilderness programs."

Amazing, we know how many crimes miniorities commits, how many homeowners in foreclosure, how much in taxes poor Americans owe the government ...

Across this country, nearly on a daily basis, youth camps run by the some of the largest for-profit correction companies are closed after reports of long term abuses. Google Texas+TYC
