Why the hell is the House spending time on another BS Republican
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 01:41 PM by Skidmore
bill? This one to honor country music. Why does this crap make its way to the floor? Here we have R after R up pontificating about apple pie and boot up the ass stuff while puffing an industry that did almost as much to sell the war as the news media.

Make that a frickin' resolution and they wanted a recorded vote on it. Damn them all. It was tabled but the idea that this could even make it to the floor is ridiculous. This industry blackballed and censored people for exerecising free speech.

1. Because our leadership is afraid of pissing off the big bad republicans.
Thats why they voted to condemn Moveon.org and threatened to censure Stark.

They are worthless.

4. No, because you allow them calendar time, so they can do this bullshit, because if you don't,
Mitt Romney and Sharpei Thompson and Lumpycheeks McCain and so forth will rally their snot-dripping, drooling faithful with an insistence that the Democrats HATE country music.

That's why.

8. Oh, please. How incredibly childish to even say that.
Decorum is a concept you might not appreciate, but others--the vast majority of others, those VOTING OTHERS--do.

And if you don't like that, oh, well. If your view held sway, your visions would be realized. But they don't, and they aren't.

9. So they voted to condemn moveon, and threatened to censure stark for decorum?
Ah I get it. They're not shitting all over their base, they are just being gentlemen.

If you aren't outraged, you aren't really paying attention...

17. I'm paying attention. I have been for many decades.
The floor of the House, like it or not, is not a saloon.

But whatever. Enjoy that outrage.

18. Listen, I'll keep my outrage burning brightly right now.
The last thing we need now in this nation is a group of people to continually tell people not to be outraged. These outrageous conditions persist because too much time has been given to the feel good jingoistic tapdance of the nature of this resolution. That resolution is a nonsequitor, as far as I'm concerned. Had nothing to do with any work of importance that needs to be accomplished by this congress. It was a waste of time and a propaganda ploy. In the meantime, we have people dying, people losing their jobs and homes, people without health care or insurance, infrastructure deteriorating, and Smirk and Sneer beating the war drums again. We need some honest outrage, and on the floor of the House.

25. Well Said
Thank you for saying this.

With the current conditions in this country, anyone who is NOT outraged is part of the problem.

19. Does decorum include relegating the minority party to hearings in broom closets
and turning off lights, mics, etc...during hearings?
Just curious because THAT is what the republicans gave US when they were majority.

22. Say, GREAT idea!!!!! Yeah, let's DO that!!!
Let's act like childish, vengeful little fuckheads!! Let's take some immature REVENGE!!!! Let's do unto others as they did unto us!!!

Yeah, that's the ticket!!! That will convince everyone that we're serious about the business of government--a little third grade pissing and moaning!!

Engaging in the OPPOSITE of decorum isn't going to make our case, now, is it?

24. I was just pointing out the obvious
There is a difference between doing these childish things and not allowing a vote on something so stupid and inane when we have a war going on.
It lends too much frivolity to what should be a solemn time.

26. "Not allowing a vote on something stupid and inane"
Yeah, well done, that. Alienate a entire population, many of whom ARE Democrats, from Maine to California with that kind of petty stuff.

These sorts of 'appreciation' votes are taken ALL THE TIME. Even during "war" (though no "war" has been declared--this is more of a "peacekeeping/policing action" gone wrong--after all, major combat operations have been ended for some time, the Monkey went on a carrier and told us so). They happen with sports victories, with special occasions (age milestones, career milestones of entertainers, etc.).

And since Congress is in session many more hours each week now that the GOP aren't running the schedule, we've got plenty of time for that sort of thing. If we need more time, well, guess what? Harry and Nancy put forth the word--ain't no one going home.

To hector about this alienates a demographic that is leaning increasingly our way, and makes our team seem meanspirited.

3. someone needs to start playing some Dixie Chicks, Steve Earle, Merle Haggard or Jim McMurtry
on the House floor as accompaniment . . . . see what they think then about shifting to a different order of business.

And if you haven't yet heard the new stuff by these fellow anti-Bush patriots, you're missing out!

7. They're easily distracted. Keep shiny, sparkly objects out of their view.

And if the rethugs want to pay tribute to country music I'll bet they'll want to focus their attention on Lee Greenwood and types like him.

11. The more time they're talking about how nice Nashville is....
...the less time the Democratic party gets to talk about the horror of the Iraq War, the incompetence of the administration, and the anti-americanism of the Republican party.

Tell a nice anecdote about how you met Dolly Parton and use up 10 minutes, that's 10 less minutes someone is talking about how poor kids don't have health care because the President vetoed the bi-partisan bill providing it.

It's that simple.
