Shock jock Don Imus returns to airwaves

By LARRY McSHANE

NEW YORK

Shock jock Don Imus will return to the airwaves Dec. 3 after eight months of a well-paid hiatus brought about by a racist and sexist remark that once seemed certain to permanently silence his broadcasting career.

Citadel Broadcasting Corp. made the announcement Thursday, confirming long-rumored reports that Imus was coming back to morning drive time on New York-based WABC-AM.

The cantankerous Imus was fired April 12 by CBS Radio amid a firestorm of controversy over his "nappy-headed hos" remark about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

"We are ecstatic to bring Don Imus back to morning radio," said WABC radio President and General Manager Steve Borneman. "Don's unique brand of humor, knowledge of the issues and ability to attract big-name guests is unparalleled. He is rested, fired up and ready to do great radio."

~snip~

The article goes on to say there's no specific mention of McGuirk coming back with him.

Personally, I never found him much more than a muttering asshole. But that's just me ..... and a long memory of this guy from his early days at WGAR in Cleveland back when I lived there for a short while. And then at WNBC when I was back on the east coast. Your mileage will likely vary. S'okay. His philanthropy earns him some points with me.

I also don't know that I'd call him a 'shock jock' anymore. Grumpy old man is more appropriate. Besides, he no longer plays music, making him a non-jock, no?

But he sure had 'em when the story of his firing first broke. I expect they'll weigh in here, too.

4. Yawn -
I really never noticed he was gone. I don't think anyone outside the beltway listened to that dumbass show.

It wasn't even carried anywhere in Northern California except on MSNBC and even then it came on at 3 in the morning. I saw it a couple of times when I got up early but the only thing worth watching on it was the occasional musical act.

Check the morning drive time ratings in NY. That show was always at or near the bottom. I think it was kept on to amuse the DC cocktail party crowd.

5. I've never really understood the appeal
For a shock jock he's not shocking or funny.

For a host he's not particularly smart or insightful.

For an interviewer he isn't very probing.

He lacks any personality besides that of a wash up douchebag.

I just don't get the appeal.

7. It seems to be a case of staying on too long.
I'm told that at one time he was funny, edgy. But, I never saw it. If it's true, it's sad that he stayed around long enough to become his own heckler.

16. Indeed!
For far too long, our country's airwaves have been devoid of the unique blend of whiny arrogance, pussified chauvinism and racism in victim drag that is Don Imus. Our national nightmare is drawing to a close, and WABC is "ecstatic" to bring it all back for a dazed nation struggling to right itself and restore overrich white men to their elevated status as the arbiters of all that is wrong with the citizens who chose not to be overrich, white, or men.

God bless America.

15. I don't watch or listen to Imus, but as an outsider the outrage and firing seemed over the top

I don't like what he said about the Rutgers team, and I think he should have apologized.

He got 20M for his firing from cbs, he got another show, and now he is a martyr of overzealous PCness.
