'Unwelcoming' US sees sharp fall in visitors since 9/11'
"The number of foreign visitors to the United States has plummeted since the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington because foreigners don't feel welcome, tourism professionals said Thursday.

"Since September 11, 2001, the United States has experienced a 17 percent decline in overseas travel, costing America 94 billion dollars in lost visitor spending, nearly 200,000 jobs and 16 billion dollars in lost tax revenue," the Discover America advocacy campaign said in a statement."

1. Waterboarding, torture, illegal wiretapping and spying, harassment at the airport....
Katrina...?

Why wouldn't foreign visitors want to come here? :sarcasm:

Edited on Fri Nov-02-07 08:57 AM by indepat
otherwise we couldn't spend as much on our military as the rest of the world spends on theirs. That a day of reckoning will come just as surely as God made little green apples in the summertime is a no-brainer.

3. I'm shocked we dont have more visitors from Europe. The Euro is kicking ass
One Euro could buy (at last look) $1.44 worth of goods. Hell, even the Canadian dollar is better off than our pitiful greenbacks.

21. I don't think I'd visit a country .. .
. . . that continues to have history's biggest dolt as it's leader, purchasing benefits notwithstanding. The US isn't exactly the most progressive country on earth, when you think about it. Our cultural and societal tastes are highly dumbed down when compared to other nations. Our media lies, distorts and withholds information on a constant basis. We scoff at the European way of running countries yet seemingly have no problem with our neo-plutocratic system and keep sending people to the White House to continue this chicanery. We still have no universal health care.

18. A lot of it is the hurdles
I have a number of friends over in Europe who are just travelling other places. For them to visit the US now from visas and other paperwork, it's just apparently too much of an annoyance and cost. Why wade through red tape to go to the US when they can go somewhere else without any.

5. My family has stopped travelling there.
If possible, we don't even change planes there. The reasons are too numerous to go into, but it's such a PITA...and we all tend to be suspicious characters, it seems. You know, educated, well read, somewhat left of centre...that sort of thing.

19. I love America
the bookstores, the university libraries, museums, parks and even just walking on a New York Avenue, but it just isn't worth the bother. What's worse is that all but one of my siblings and most of my relatives live in America. These days I only visit when I have to - graduations and conferences. I've passed on the Thanksgiving family reunion. I don't think a four day trip is worth airport harassment six times. I'm not coming for Christmas either. I used to visit three and four times a year.

22. Gee .... all the **other** third world countries get good revenue from tourism. Why can't we?
If you've gone abroad since 9/11, and paid attention to non-Americans at your port of embarkation, you KNOW this is true, even with our very devalued money making US travel a real bargain for non-Americans. Who wants to come over here for holiday and get treated like fucking felon?

I am SO ashamed of our country. I find it harder to afford travel even as my European friends prefer not to come over here.

24. I recently came back from Europe and there were tons of tourists there
Granted Europe does have more to see. Europeans can also travel to one another's countries easily now that they have the Euro passport and no monetary exchange where countries use the Euro.

People were nice to us Americans, too. I guess they figure if we are there we aren't the wackos insulting their countries and acting superior.

Most right wing wackos don't want to travel anyway. They sure don't want them furriners coming over here.
