Leahy to vote NO on Mukasey
Leahy won't support Attorney General nominee

Published: Friday, November 2, 2007
By John Curran
The Associated Press

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D.-Vt., the powerful chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said today he won’t support Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey, potentially derailing his confirmation for refusing to define waterboarding as torture.

“No American should need a classified briefing to determine whether waterboarding is torture,” said Leahy who planned a 3 p.m. news conference to make the announcment in Burlington.

The announcement will likely determine whether the full Senate will vote to send Mukasey to a Justice Department that has been leaderless for weeks. Four Democrats on Leahy’s panel, which will decide Tuesday whether to approve Mukasey’s confirmation, have already said they will not support him.

5. Schumer is the one that suggested Mukasey to Bush.
Don't count on him to now vote no.

8. Schumer has an honourable way to vote against Mukasey, IMO
Edited on Fri Nov-02-07 01:42 PM by glarius
They are saying he is in a quandary as to what to do now. Am I being simple-minded by thinking that all he has to do if he now wants to change his mind and vote against him is.....Say he was for him until he found out how Mukasey feels about waterboarding. Now that he hears what Mukasey has said, he can no longer support him. It's as simple as that, IMO.

14. He's the Chairman of the committee
it's my understanding from someone I just talked to that he's been trying to get Feinstein and Schumer on board behind the scenes, and that his mind has been made up for quite some time.

7. Good for Leahy. But you can see what is happening here.
That waterboarding business IS the unmoveable wall as far as BushCo is concerned. They want to keep that technique under the legal, but distasteful "Stress and Duress" category; not under the "Torture" category.

Of course, we're stuck with a nut who's crazier than Gonzo in the meanwhile...but whatever. Everyone knows that guy's number, so he might be constrained by a bit of hue and cry. Bush may well just leave things as they are if he doesn't get his way.

I think Senate Judiciary is gonna be busy in the next year. They'll be doing a shitload of "oversight" because it will be sorely needed.

And Reid has gotta keep the Senate in continuous session, pretty much. I think it's a ten day max before Bush can appoint someone, a la Bolton--not positive of that, but it's along those lines. Guess there will be fewer holiday CODELS...you know, go visit the troops QUICK QUICK, stop in Germany for a few days to, er, take a briefing, buy beer, fancy steins, cuckoo clocks, er, tour the hospital, uh, purchase assorted sweets, Mercedes car parts, and touristy crap on the way home!

11. I apologize for my previous comments
Leahy has indeed stepped up to the plate when it counted. Now I'm worried about our worthless POS senator feinstein. She really took a ration of shit for her vote for that racist judge so maybe her ass is still burning and she'll feel the need to prove herself to the real Dems among her constituency by voting no on mukasey. But I just never know about her.

Schumer has painted himself into a corner and let his ego get in the way of his good judgment. Hopefully he'll be enough of a man to admit he was wrong about his support of this tool and vote against him. I think he'll succumb to peer pressure and vote no.

change his mind, it's over.
