The US Dollar continues to plummet...
The current exchange rate: 1 $CAN = 0.9344 $US

Can it possibly get any worse? (Probably. And, as long Chimpenfurher is allowed to rule, it's a virtual certainty.)

But is it as bad as it seems? Let's look at a few comparison graphs...

First, US v Canada in the Past 5 years:

Next, US v Euro in the Past 5 years:

err...

Now, US v UK Pound in the Past 5 years:

umm...

Here's US v the Aussie Dollar in the Past 5 years:

uh oh...

Finally US v the Yen in the Past 5 years:

At least there's one that bucks the trend. Except for this one little detail... Japan is in a Recession! Yes, the only industrialized nation's currency the US Dollar isn't tanking against is in a Recession! If that doesn't get the alarm bells ringing, nothing will.

6. Yup. Except for the pre-Y2K seller's market, it showed confidence in the dollar.

People run to gold when they lose confidence in the "full faith and credit."

The 2006 election season shows a definite "mixed" sentiment - swings of optimism/pessimism - finally fipping to the pessimism side as "impeachment was off the table" and the 110th Congress kept on deficit funding the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan ... with no end in sight.

7. I've never seen anything like it.
We're printing money like fools in order to finance our adventures in Iraq, Afghanistan, and (coming soon) Iran.
This is resulting in simultaneous inflation and recession.
Add to this the historic rise in oil prices, and we're back in the 1970's and 'stagflation'.
We had an inverted bond yield curve form early '05 until just a couple of months ago.
Historically, every time we've had an inverted yield curve, it's been followed by recession.
Our economy is a house of cards that can't stand as basis for current Wall Street exuberance.
We're a service economy entirely dependent on the velocity of money...guess what? It's slowing down.
<rant/off>
sorry to be a buzz grind.

8. There are only two ways to fund wars.
Higher taxes or printing currency. Guess which one our government has chosen. Debasement of currency has always been the easier, but far more taxing choice.

12. Yup, the CBC is reporting that American day trippers are going over in lower numbers.
The Windsor (Ontario) Casino is laying off employees. The place actually looked like it was closed. No people traffic moving in or out.

A few years ago, a $100 US bill exchanged for more than $150 Canadian. The casino was filled with Yanks.

No more.

Today you need $107.04 US to get $100 Canadian.

Those day trippers are either gambling in Detroit now, or not gambling at all.

The good news for Canada is that Windsor pharmacies continue to do spectacular volume due to American customers.

13. The Canadian gov't is going to lose significant amounts of tax revenue as well.

Quite a few Canadians in the border areas work in the US. Their salaries are definitely sliding down into lower tax brackets as the US dollar plummets.
