Young US voters may get scoop in 2008
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7073664.stm

With a year to go before the 2008 US presidential elections, young Americans are poised to mark their growing engagement in politics with an ambitious online news site.

The creators of Scoop08.com, which launches on 4 November, say it will be the first to harness the power of students across the US to follow the campaign.

"We noticed there was a void when it came to national, grassroots, student journalism that really could have an impact on issues of importance," said co-founder Alexander Heffner, 17.

Whether the venture sky-rockets or fizzles, its very existence reflects a social shift that candidates and major parties ignore at their peril. Namely, America's young voters, traditionally seen as apathetic, are becoming more active voters - and there are more and more of them.

1. I often wonder why so many are apathetic. Is it the consumerist culture that does it?
It seems to place more importance on material possessions and being in style instead of encouraging a culture of social awareness and of being informed.

3. NO! It's the fact that there IS NO DRAFT!
They don't have to take responsibility for this war. Hell, The war barely makes the news! Only poor people have to fight in it and you don;t even have to give up your panty hose, much less your car tires. The only sacrifice we, the American People, make for this war is the destruction of our Democracy and as long as we can still afford an x-box, that sacrifice is not too great!

We are pathetic!

We are a cancer upon the planet and deserve to become extinct. With global warming, that is coming sooner, rather than later.

4. Youth that I know
think their elders are crazy dinosaurs. They wonder why we appear to be salivating over the next repug sexcape while the 30 unders accepts Bi‑sexual, Bi-curious, and a sundry inventory of self-identifying sexual orientation.

They are talking and concern. We are disconnected from them in the same manner as we complaint about the DLC disonnect.

5. Bah, social issues aren't what kills them. What will kill them is economic issues.
And many of them, quite frankly, will probably do worse off than their parent's generation did. I'm willing to assume that they're going to be the first generation in quite a while that actually ended up worse off economically than when they started. The gap between the rich and the poor has grown bigger, not smaller.

They wonder why, and many of them are as ignorant of economics and the history of class struggle as their parents, and that's not an indictment of them, merely an observation. A good number of them live in a vacuum, isolated from history or the outside world, just like the rest of the population in this country.

6. Agree
"The gap between the rich and the poor has grown bigger, not smaller."

On our watch. It appears that we have watched helplessly, with an overwhelming sense of horror, the greatest wealth transfer or “organized looting” in this country’s history. IMHO, this “wealth transfer” that robs the youth relies on conformists. We need to show them that we understand and are willing to come out of our comfort zones to stop the bankrupting of their futures.

2. Well, Goddamnit, it's about time!
I am tired of saving the world for them! I'm 57, I want to retire. My knees are shot, my back is shot, I can't see shit anymore and I am tired of preserving their Democracy for them. Fuck, I've been doing this since I was 16. It's time for the young uns to step up to the plate and stop with the Extacy and video games and to start taking a stand! Fuck J. Lo and Paris! Your never gonna be them! Get over it and pay attention to shit that matters!
