Republican focus group for primaries on CSPAN2...interesting on several levels
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 04:41 AM by Skidmore
1) everyone on it is from Virginia--not exactly "flyover country" as the Rs are fond of representing themselves as championing but possibly more representative of those who live in a region where politics are the business.

2) people on it started out talking about their anxieties over the economy and life in general--not so different than those we express

3) simplistic and superficial solutions---on guy said his anxieties over the nation as the result of all the "bad news" on every news channel available and things would be better if he could just get "good news;" one woman--a substitute teacher--thinks we could just somehow legislate to keep families together; and then there's the tough on crime faction; *'s base is also represented in the guy that has to problems in his personal life--just fine but whatever little heartburn he has is caused by politicians. Forgot to add the Christian on the group who is seeing himself as persecuted and believes others (far leftists precisely) are trying to take his values away.

4) Most acknowledging we need to get out of Iraq, but some still want to see "victory"

What is occuring to me is if this is the lazy manner in which those R think tanks conduct focus groups, no wonder we have such fine propaganda.

1. Asked who would they support who they thought could magically
be entered into the race and could solve the problems:

1 selected Al Gore
a couple of someone like Reagan
2 want * for another
and get this,
3 see Neal Boortz as saviour of the world

3. Neal Boortz???
Whoa. I don't even begin to understand someone who thinks Neal Boortz is the answer to anything.

4. I can't either. They were just asked if Rudy were a member of their families
who would he be. A few fathers and a rich uncle (mostly men responding) and one woman said he's like the "evil stepfather."

5. They'd like Guiliani to be their neighbor because he could take care
of things if there was a problem. Party of personal responsibility, eh? These people are suffering from arrested development.

2. They are very suspicious of Romney and his religion...
it's like they want Christian values but only their denomination's values. They don't see him as being like them.

8. He *isn't* like them.
Mormonism is a cult based on but very different from Christianity. Examples: Mormons deny the divinity of Christ and don't accept the Trinity. They also believe that God used to be a man and that (Mormon) men will become gods in the afterlife. Sorry Mitt, but whatever that is, it ain't Christianity.

6. These people aren't picking a president based on issues, they are picking
someone who can act the part. They are picking an image. And this makes me even more angry with our own party because we are playing their game.

7. Not a one of these people indicated they would vote for anyone but
the party's candidate in the general election, no matter who it was.

9. I watched for a while and when they said they thought * was doing a good job
I changed to another station. I wonder what the moderator thinks.
