That is pathetic

I suspect some of has to do with the general stupidity of the American public, but it may also have to do with the selection of candidates we have.

Perhaps they are not getting their message out, or maybe it is because their message is to vauge?

1. Polling at this point is meaningless
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 10:29 AM by Quixote1818
People simply react to names they are familiar with. Once the ads that show how similar these Republicans are to Bush they will drop like a rock.

This is the stat I would look at:

10/21-23/07

Candidate Republican 40 Democratic 53 Unsure 6

2. I don't think it is meaningless, because it indicates the lack of critical thinking
in the American public

I am not confident at all, and 2000 and 2004 should tell you why

Even in 2006, it was extremely close

3. I think the huge shift from registered Republicans to registered Democrats is a better indicator
of where the country is politicaly. For example, if you compare the National Polls to Iowa and New Hampshire where people are more tuned in, candidates like Hillary and Giuliani are neck and neck with the other candidates. Actually Romney is ahead of Giuliani in Iowa. National polls show a much different story simply because people are not tuned in yet.

Those National Polls are catching people who are not following things very closely. They may even think Giuliani and Romney are Democrats. They don't know where they stand on the issues. It's more about name recognition than anything.

5. I question the polling process. Noone has ever really explained to me
how the people/households are chosen. Obviously that can dramatically impact the results.

ie: If 1,500 people are chosen at random would give a much different result than 750 Dems & 750 Pubs would. Do these pollsters make calls to people in all States, or so they only sample some States?

I seem to remember much closer poll #'s during the runup to the Clinton/Dole election than the runal outcome was.

8. What it shows me

is that in the eyes of the public, there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference in the policies of Rudy and Hillary.
