Poll question: Does D.U. Have Anything To Do With The Democratic Party?
Since so many of those who post here do so merely to express their umbrage
with Democrats, their policies, and candidates, can it really be said to have
much if anything to do with Democratic Party?

1. Other. Nice framing.
I take umbrage with CERTAIN democrats - not all democrats. People would not post here (unless they are trolls) unless they had some connection or affiliation or affinity for the Democratic party. That does not mean that all democrats are perfect, or even good, but that the party has consistantly had a platform and principles that we support - even as those who hold office betray those principles.

While no Maoist, I do have a certain respect for the 'self criticism' that Mao required of his followers. The day we stop criticising our politicians is the day we stop being Democrats.

2. I said "sometimes."
I honestly think DU tends to be (overall) more left of center than the Dem party as a whole. There may be isolated pockets of "uber left" folks out there, but the majority of Dems probably fall someplace closer to the center than you see on here.

Having said, that, I will admit freely that I have become very unhappy with what I see happening both nationally and locally. It doesn't make me want to leave the party, but it really does point out the chasm that has grown within the last ten years. Primary fights are never pretty, but frequently they serve a positive purpose by establishing a direction for the party (assuming the majority will is followed or accepted) and by motivating the voter base.

3. From "About Democratic Underground LLC"
"While the vast majority of our visitors are Democrats, this web site is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, nor do we claim to speak for the party as a whole."

Get it?

8. You need to reread the question.
Words, they mean stuff.

11. DU has NEVER had anything to do with the Democratic Party
The owners have said so repeatedly. Their words mean stuff too. I'm sorry you are unable to understand.

7. If it does, the bosses in D.C. (aka - the "real world") aren't listening.
Of course, they are very busy having lunch with the lobbyists, and quivering in fear of their Republican colleagues.

Should be exciting!

15. I don't see anyone expressing "umbrage" at Russ Feingold,
Barbara Boxer, Jan Schakowsky, Henry Waxman, Dennis Kucinich,
Patrick Leahy, Bernie Sanders, ET AL,

who CONSISTENTLY represent the PEOPLE of America.

Where else can we complain about OUR OWN REPRESENTATIVES
who are FAILING to carry out the will of the people?
In public, I RAIL against the Republicans, here, I
feel free to complain about those in MY OWN PARTY who
ENABLE their plans.

I also give thanks to those Democrats who work tirelessly
and sometimes it seems, thanklessly to push for the progressive
policies that this country needs to avert disaster.

P.S.: Your poll is BULLSHIT

19. DU is an awesome thing to behold when its at its best
Organized action is at its best here when something needs to be done.

Even the internal sniping has some merit. It forces those of us who have "gone public" in our support to pay attention to what our candidates are doing. The "battles" help to sharpen us for the debate with both Dems and Reps in our offline lives.

And, at times, on some threads, it's just a big ol pile of steaming dukey. :)

26. There is evidence to show
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 09:50 PM by Kurovski
that most Americans hold "leftist" views on the environment, health care, regulation of industry and tending to those in need of assistance.

Molly Ivins wrote a column with some of this info. She was refering to the bewildering way Dem politicians work against the wishes of a majority of Americans. (including Republican citizens.)

Assholes like Newt Gingrich, grover norquist, Plush Lintball and many, many filled shitbags of other right-wingers have worked hard with many millions of dollars to move the idea that Americans are not "left". It's no secret that the concept of "left" has been strategically moved to the Right.

Again...it's no secret.

28. I guess we're all supposed to be good Democrats
and do as we're told by our party leaders.

Sorry, but Dem leaders and those who work for elected officials and campaigns need to take a look at their own losing record in the recent past and accept the fact that the grassroots base of the party is more than someone they visit every 4 years for money and GOTV.

Sorry, the party belongs to all of us and during the primary season, with a pathetic record of losses behind us, and a complete failure of our leaders in Congress, its time to take stock of the situation and discuss where we're headed.

If practicing democracy within the Democratic Party makes you uncomfortable, maybe you need to find another party.
