A million homeless after Mexican floods
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=296966

Nearly one million people in the southern Mexican state of Tabasco are homeless in the wake of the region's worst flooding in 50 years.

Days of heavy rains have caused river banks in the region to overflow, submerging much of the oil-rich region underwater. Television footage showed many residents standing on rooftops waiting to be rescued, in scenes reminiscent of the southern U.S. city of New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.

The disaster has also left grocery stores without food and water, and there have been reports of looting. President Felipe Calderon, who visited the state Friday, has asked Mexicans to donate bottled water, canned goods, personal items and other vital supplies.
Weather forecasters predict there will be more rain in the coming days.

These poor people

2. What a huge tragedy -- this is Mexico's Nuevo Orleans.
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 08:14 PM by eppur_se_muova
The big difference with NOLA is that there is so much less leeway in the Mexican economy that for those fleeing the floodwaters, this is much less likely to be "working out pretty well for them", in Babs' immor(t)al phrase.

edit: spleiing.

7. Well I am assuming since I told many a times
a young LT where to stuff it, as I drove my ambulance though a military checkpoint

That little thing about Independence is taken seriously down there.

That other one, neutrality is also taken very seriously

I emailed them today asking where to send a check... my body cannot do this anymore, or I'd volunteer just as I would have last week here in California.

Hell I qualify as a veteran

:-)

4. They've taken all the hits this year.
I hope they do better than we did. At the worst, I hope they learn enough to be ready for the next time. Because there will be.

10. Irish government offers aid.
Government offers aid to Mexico

The Government is to provide emergency funding for areas of Mexico and Caribbean which have been affected by severe flooding in recent days.

The Minister of State for Overseas Development, Michael Kitt, announced that Irish aid will make up to €1 million available for relief efforts for those affected by severe flooding in Mexico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and other countries in the region hit by Hurricane Noel.

A week of heavy rains over Mexico caused rivers to overflow, drowning at least 80 per cent of the swampy, oil-rich state of Tabasco. Much of the state capital, Villahermosa, looked like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, with murky water reaching to second-storey rooftops and desperate people waiting to be rescued.

President Felipe Calderon, flying overhead, called it one of Mexico's worst recent natural disasters.

Making the announcement of emergency relief funding, Minister Kitt said: "I am shocked by the severity of the floods experienced in the Gulf of Mexico. The Irish Aid emergency funding that I am announcing this afternoon will assist in international efforts to provide shelter and relief to those who have been worst affected." Irish Aid's funds will be distributed through partner relief organisations operating in the region, including the UN and Red Cross.
