Pakistan denies rumours Musharraf under house arrest
"Pakistan's government on Monday denied rumours sweeping the country that the deputy army chief had placed military ruler President Pervez Musharraf under house arrest.

'This is not true. There is no truth in it. He is at Aiwan-e-Sadr (the presidential palace) and has met with foreign diplomats,' a senior government spokesman told Agence France-Presse.

"Musharraf imposed a state of emergency on Saturday citing spiraling militancy and a hostile judiciary, in a move that came as the Supreme Court was due to rule on the legality of his October 6 re-election as president."

Has anyone else heard these rumors, this is the first I've seen.

4. This rumor is running rife in newspapers around the world
although I doubt it. The fact that these rumors exist at all, however, is indicative of a rapidly deteriorating situation for Musharraf. I believe the imposition of martial law was an act of desperation; he feared that the SC would rule against the legitimacy of his rule. Just like Chimpolini and the invasion of Iraq, however, he doesn't have the foggiest notion of what to do next.

6. I heard about this rumor on CBC this morning
Not that it has any credence, but with the TV stations shut down, rumors are everywhere in Pakistan right now.

Can you imagine what it would be like if Bush simultaneously declared martial law AND all the TV stations went off the air?

There would be immense fear, speculation and panic.
