I wish I knew WHY
no Senator will put a hold on Mukasey. I don't buy that they're all cowards. I don't think Sanders, Feingold, Leahy and others are that. I don't think it has to do with Ahthrax or blackmail or that those folks are in collusion with bushco.

My best guess is that it has something to do with the hide bound traditions of the Senate. It's easy to scoff at that, but institutions often have a a life of their own, so to speak, and if you don't conform to the structure, it crushes you.

I still wish one of them would do it, but I know it won't happen.

1. I think a lot of the more-liberal senators like those you mentioned...
are concerned about who Bush would install as a recess appointment if Mukasey isn't confirmed.

2. Yes, that's true
and they're worried about the damage Keisler is doing in the interim, as well. But, I'm not sure that's enough of a reason to let this appointment go through unchallenged.

3. I agree. But I see that other side of it as well.
Do we confirm Mukasey, a guy who's at least worried over torture, or do we let Bush recess-appoint someone who actually advocates it?

5. OK, but given her history
her vote was predictable without the plane ride, and even if he promised not to have Justice investigate her conflict of interest, he can't prevent that for too much longer, and there's always the possibility, however slim, that the Senate will investigate her for ethics charges.

8. .
Yeah well 'hide bound traditions'(???) or not Congress needs to quit "playing nice".Republi'k's sure as hell weren't "bound" when they were in control...

History will condemn this Congress for not doing a lot of things that damn well should have been done.
