Kids in Florida using human waste to get high
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/1105072jenkem1.html

NOVEMBER 5--We're not sure what they're inhaling down in Collier County, Florida, but here's the bizarre "information bulletin" prepared by the local sheriff's intelligence bureau about a purported "new drug" favored by the kids. It's an inhalant called "Jenkem," and causes hallucinations and a "euphoric high." Of course, as the bulletin notes, Jenkem users dislike its sewagey taste, which can last for days. That's because Jenkem's active ingredients are urine and fecal matter, hence its street names like "Butthash" and "Fruit from Crack Pipe." Click here to see a video report on Jenkem, via Breitbart.tv. We've tried to speak with the bulletin's author, Lieutenant Al Ganich, but he has not returned TSG calls. Perhaps he's realized that his "CONFIDENTIAL" September 26 report--which is authentic, according to a sheriff's official--may be itself full of shit. Ganich's alert reminds us of a New York Fire Department memo from a chief who also apparently never heard of snopes.com. (1 page)

5. I'm a member of TOTSE, and it was a joke.
Pickwick (the name of that kid) was bored and trolling, and came up with Jenkem. However as a TOTSEan, I am proud we are getting more coverage.

14. Sounds like they're learning how to make BioGas.
Characteristics of Bio-Gas

Bio-gas usually contains about 60 to 70 percent methane, 30 to 40 percent carbon dioxide, and other gases, including ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans and other noxious gases. It also is saturated with water vapor.

The heat value of the raw gas at typical Colorado atmospheric pressures is about 400 to 600 British thermal units (Btu) per cubic foot. In comparison, natural gas has a heat value of 850 Btu per cubic foot and gasoline contains approximately 120,000 Btu per gallon. Partial removal of the impurities may be required. This is not necessarily difficult, but it does complicate the system.

If they could up the production of it, it could power a gas stove, perhaps an oven, even a generator.

18. Maybe the kids are calling attention to corporate welfare.

The GRACE viewpoint on methane digesters. The US government has started to hand out subsidies to farmers to install methane digesters--which extract methane from animal manure to create energy--as a way to deal with problems associated with factory farm waste. Digesters have greatly varying efficiencies, sometimes using all of the methane produced to sustain the production of more methane. The process is prohibitively expensive unless subsidized by taxpayer money and requires a constant supply of manure, but does not diminish the amount of manure present after methane has been extracted. Thus, methane digesters should not be viewed as a sustainable solution for factory farm waste, but rather a mechanism for perpetuating the production of excess manure...

Why can the kids do it for free and for fun, but the farmers need government money?

Perhaps the kids inhaling the gas unburned is a metaphor for the rest of us about, ahem, waste.

19. Active ingredient? Mercaptans? Methanethiol = methyl mercaptan
Methanethiol (also known as methyl mercaptan) is a colorless gas with a smell like rotten cabbage. It is a natural substance found in the blood, brain, and other tissues of people and animals. It is released from animal feces. It occurs naturally in certain foods, such as some nuts and cheese. It is also one of the main chemicals responsible for bad breath and the smell in flatulence. The chemical formula for methanethiol is CH3SH; it is classified as a thiol.

The United States material safety data sheet (MSDS) lists methanethiol as a colorless, flammable gas with an extremely strong and repulsive smell. At very high concentrations it is highly toxic and affects the central nervous system. Its penetrating odor provides warning at dangerous concentrations. An odor threshold of 0.002 ppm has been reported. The United States OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit is listed as 10 ppm.

>snip<

Methanethiol is also a byproduct of asparagus metabolism in some percentage of people. It is responsible for a noticeable change in the odor of urine as early as a few hours after eating asparagus.<2>

Perhaps some kids will make a science experiment out of this.
