3. The Republicans just played us like Nintendo.
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 04:42 PM by Basileus Basileon
The vote to impeach will fail. There will be nice Democratic speeches about how Cheney is a bad man, and nice Republican speeches about how the Democrats are wasting taxpayer's time and money on playing politics instead of solving problems. Then they'll have a vote, and impeachment will fail, because the Dems will decide that failing now is less embarrassing than failing in the Senate.

Then the Republicans will crow about the Democratic defeat.

Edit: Ah, good. The Democrats have moved it back into committee, where it can die a quiet, peaceful death. Very, very minor win for the Dems today, then.

61. The votes were not there...
...because these two useless twits have kept the issue "off the table" and made certain that never is heard a discouraging word about their GOP masters.

He may well have embarrassed the DLC wing of the party, and those reactionary blue dogs, but so what? Appeasing them has resulted in the national embarrassment that this congress has become -- and resulting in its lofty 11 percent approval rating.

He's grandstanding, all right, if you call telling the truth grandstanding. But he's been forced to raise the issue because the party "leadership," if you can call it that without crumbling to the floor in gales of rib-shattering laughter, has steadfastly refused to do its job. Dennis is essentially acting as the Terminex man; trying to rid the country of a dangerous hive of insect pests who specialize in demolishing the infrastructure plank by plank.

Dennis' cage is a construction of the DLC and is ably maintained by BushCo's unofficial pom-pom wavers in mass media, along with their connections to wingnut think tanks for supporting commentary that, somehow, always manages to support the official story and the status quo and laughs at, marginalizes and attacks anything "unconventional."

So at least you're in good company.

a well-documented, well-researched, airtight, cut-and-dried case before you even THINK about bringing this to the floor. If the leadership and many other Dems thought they had this, then there wouldn't be this little "drama" today, and the Repubs wouldn't have made their maneuver to force a debate.

50. By and large, I think grounds for impeachment can be about anything Congress wants them to be.
The "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors" stuff is where impeachment is obligatory -- past that, they can apparently impeach someone for putting their socks on before their shoes, if they're so inclined and can get the votes. (Whether such a charge would hold up in the Senate, of course, is always another matter.)

With that in mind, impeaching DICK because he's a snarling, sorry sack of shit is as good a reason as any. Hell, impeach him because he has unlawful carnal knowledge of cute puppies, too. (I'd like to see his defense team defend that one with a straight face! )

31. That is some mighty fine analysis there...
Oh wait, it isn't.

or does it just admit the defeat that one feels the democrats must have because they lack the strength and ability to present facts in a cohesive manner?

What is even funnier is your inability to see past a "win" or "loss".

When the GOP impeached Clinton and failed to get a conviction it was a huge win for the democrats... not because Clinton beat the impeachment, but, because the VAST majority of people, after hearing all of the facts, thought that the concept of impeaching a president for not being entirely honest about a sexual affair was idiotic.

"Failing" in the senate isn't a loss. It forces "republicans" to sign onto the set of facts.

However, what is sad is you are probably right. The democratic congress lacks the courage of their convinctions and will not likely be able to present facts in a cohesive manner.

51. You are scared of analysis.
The democrats are scared of confrontation and lack the ability to defend their position when challenged. Sound familiar?

They are often unable to see the big picture, which is why they have lost so many elections and even now have record disapproval ratings for their inaction in congress.

What you force through an impeachment movement is a full airing of the FACTS and you FORCE the republicans to sign onto those facts, thereby attaching the republican party to those actions... unless you are suggesting that Dick has done nothing illegal???

Right now the GOP President has a <30% approval rating, but the republican candidates get more than 45% support in polling. This is because people are not automatically associating all things republican to this president. The way you can accomplish this connection is by forcing republicans to work as a group to vote to save a vice president who has obviously committed illegal acts.

Gotta love when people start from the defeatist position and cower in their corners. It has worked so well for the past 15 years, so why not just keep it up.

Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 05:56 PM by Basileus Basileon
You've given me no "analysis" more insightful than that of a 10th-grader in a Che shirt.

There wouldn't be Republicans "working as a group to save him." Here's what would happen:

1. Republicans say, "This is a huge waste of everyone's time, and we're going to vote against it for that reason."
2. There's a vote. Impeachment fails.
3. Nobody associates the Republicans with Cheney's crimes. They just go, "oh, well, Dems are weak, can't get anything done. Can't even get time-wasting bullshit done."

The Republicans saw this. That's why they wanted to force a vote. The Democratic leadership saw this. That's why they wanted to avoid a vote.

Defeatism? Cowering? To paraphrase Barack Obama, I'm not against all political fights. I'm against dumb political fights.

16. Well, it went to committee...
so that means it will either be investigated or it will be killed there.

25. It got kicked back to committee.
Where it will die a lonely death. What did we gain? When it's available, all the Democratic cowards that voted to table the motion. THAT'S the list I want to see.

30. Are we sure?
My understanding is that DK's resolution is being referred back to the Judiciary COmmittee. Has some assurance been given that the Committee will take any action?

39. Why do you think it is going to be investigated?
It's back in committee probably tucked away at the bottom of the pile never to be heard from again.

43. Hoyer is
probably twisting Conyers arm as we type, as if it needed twisting to let it die in committee.

but the Dems are well on their way to proving it is entirely probable that they will blow another election.

47. So much defeatism and caution here, it amazes me.
"We'll never make it, we're doomed." Fuck that. I applaud Dennis Kucinich for having the guts to do what needs to be done. If no one else has the guts, then they can rot in hell. You can't play safe here, there is way too much at stake. And with all due respect, no one here knows how the American public would respond. Those arguing it would backfire are talking out their ass. It could just as easily bring the kind of relief that holding someone accountable, finally, tends to foster.

As for Republicans, sure, look at their motivations. But they're not infallible. They can't predict everything either. In spite of dirty tricks, theft, a propaganda network, a network of think tanks, the bully pulpit, etc., they still lost in '06.

66. If we want this, we have to make vast impact on DLC/Pelosi-Hoyer-Reid . . .
And . . . Conyers, of course, who is listening to what his leaders are demanding ---

What will it take to create such an impact that they have to acknowledge the public's
desire for impeachment?
