Fellow DU'ers, the corporate media and Steny Hoyer have dealt impeachment the smackdown
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 08:36 PM by steve2470
Here is the exact text from the Los Angeles Times article:

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/la-na-impeach7nov07,1,518923.story?coll=la-news-politics-national

<snip>

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) hoped to avoid a bruising floor fight that would have required Democrats to choose between a liberal base that might cheer a Cheney impeachment and a broader electorate that might view it as a partisan ploy at a time of war. She held open the vote, technically slated for 15 minutes, for more than an hour and finally forced the measure to an uncertain future in the committee.

"Impeachment is not on our agenda," said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.). "We have some major priorities. We need to focus on those."

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), agreed that it was not in Pelosi's interests to advance the articles of impeachment. "If she were to let this thing out of the box, considering the number of legislative issues we have pending ... it could create a split that could affect our productivity for the rest of the Congress," Conyers told Fox News.

<snip>

Frankly, I'm shocked at Conyers statement. Did he really say that ????????????

2. Such BS!!!
They can't hope to get much accomplished with BushCo holding the veto powers. This is just stupid.

If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem! Not impeaching obvious criminals is condoning their actions!

6. That's not what I heard and I was there.
Hoyer spoke out to put this thing into Committee and that will open the whole Pandora's box. We have a good start, now all we need is the people to come to the House and let their legislators know how important this issue is.

10. I don't want to burst your bubble, but when something "goes to committee,"
especially when it has been in committee all these moons, it ain't coming back out.
Their whole attempt, the democratic leadership's, was to get that special resolution off the floor and not hold any sort of debate on it.
The first try, by a panic-stricken Hoyer, was to "table" the resolution.
This is what they mean when they say "laid upon the table." It technically keeps a bill alive, since it did not get voted down, but it kills that bill. They don't have to pick it up off the table and they do not do so.

The second attempt to short-circuit Kucinich, which succeeded after some procedural wrangling, was to get the measure returned to the judicial committee. It's never coming out of committee. The chairman of that committee, John Conyers, has said it's gonna be kept in the box.

It's never coming out of committee. No amount of phone calls, letters, emails---nuthin'! can get it out of committee if they don't wanna, and they do not. The deal's been made.

The only, the ONLY, saving grace in all this is that it is a "special" or "privileged" resolution, which means Kucinich could bring it up again, if he can figure out a way to do so, with any chance of success.

I'm sorry if it hurts--it hurts me, too, but the resolution is really, truly dead.

9. I am really confused now. Is this impeachment bill dead in the water...
...or has it been sent to the House Judiciary Committee (which may drown it)?

On another thread, someone posted that that comment by Conyers wasn't made today, but is recent history. Anyone?

11. Steny, Steny, Steny
The world has passed you by. I don't live in your district, but plenty of my friends and associates do. You will be getting a letter from me ASAP regarding the definition of "major priorities." I happen to think ethical government is one of them-don't you?
