Farm payments benefited legislators
Payments benefited legislators

When the bill that would extend farm subsidies for five years goes to the Senate floor this week, eight senators will have special reason to pay close attention: They or their relatives collected about $3 million in federal payments from 1995 to 2005, according to government records compiled by a non-partisan environmental group.

They join four House members in a small group of lawmakers connected to farming operations that received a total of $6.2 million in subsidies over that period. Many say their experience with the programs has given them valuable insight into the issue.

1. And unless something unprecedented happens in the Senate Chamber
there's not going to be any drastic changes in this new Farm Bill.Oh, there's a couple of bones being tossed to us organic rebels to try and shut us up and another bone or two tossed in the general direction of the urban food to the poor and elderly schemes, but in the overall tally of the total BIll it's a mere pittance. It's downright shameful when held up next to what we've wasted on a misguided goose chase and megalomaniacal rodeo in the Middle East, not counting the blood spilled and lives lost, of course.

4. Want to know why junk food is cheaper than healthy food?
Because of farm subsidies to the sugar lobby. Eliminate the subsidies to the people who don't need subsidies, and healthy food should become more competitive in the market.

5. I'm only recently learning how important this bill is
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 07:42 AM by YankeyMCC
It is a powerful piece of legislation and if the congress truly had the vision and courage it could be a means to address many of the most pressing issues facing this nation, including environmental impact, support of family farmers, general health, trade, etc...
