Backers of California "steal the 2008 election", I mean "initiative" plot identified

"From Chris Lehane, Californians for Fair Election Reform: "Despite the fact it polls at below 25% and the right wing power grabbers are reporting much less money than the $2.8 million that they claimed to have several weeks ago, the support of the initiative reflects just how desperate Republicans are when it comes to 2008 and just how far they are willing to go in trying to keep their death grip on power. By looking to cherry pick California as the ONLY large state to change how it counts its votes, the Republican Party is making clear it cannot win in the presidency unless they can rig the electoral college so that the Republicans can win the presidency even if they lose the popular vote. There is a reason that Democrats do not support this effort; that independent academic experts have been critical; that virtually every editorial board in the state has opposed it; and that even leading Republicans such as the Governor have questioned the initiative -- it is nothing less than an effort to hijack the 2008 presidential election."
