Former SD Legislator Convicted of Rape

By CHET BROKAW
Associated Press Writer

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A former state lawmaker was convicted Tuesday night of raping two former foster daughters during physical examinations that he claimed would help them sell their reproductive eggs.

The Hughes County jury found Ted Klaudt guilty of all four counts of second-degree rape after deliberating for three hours. Klaudt, 49, could get as many as 25 years in prison for each count when he is sentenced in January.

<snipping>

Klaudt also is scheduled to stand trial next week for rape and other offenses in Corson County, where he lives.

Klaudt's attorney Tim Rensch didn't deny during the trial that his client gave the girls physical examinations or that they were part of a scheme by which the girls were told they could make thousands of dollars for selling their reproductive eggs....

2. Glad to see this slug was convicted...
I am rarely surprised any more when I read of such reprehensible acts. Sadly, there are people out there that would exploit children, and they should be put away for long periods of time.

While Klaudt is an R, (strange that so many R's find themselves in similar positions), there are D's and I's that crawl out the same swamp.

I have no tolerance for those that would abuse children, and Klaudt should get the max.

3. It's the hypocrisy, rasputin....
... of those who hide behind the so-called pro-life, pro-family party while abusing their own families. How many times in just the past couple of years have we read about yet another GOPig lawmaker who has been convicted of abusing/sexually molesting children, even in their own household? How many times have we read about representatives of the GOPig Party engaging in closeted gay sex while in public they villify the gay community and run on anti-gay platforms?

I'll bet that at the same time Klaudt was raping his foster daughters (on the pretense of marketing their "reproductive eggs", no less!) he was voting against contraception, choice, etc etc. I'm sick of these twisted, hypocritical pigs who claim to represent "real family values". To hell with them!!!!!!

4. I concur...it is all about the hypocrisy. While the act itself is
vile, it is the cover-up and the hypocrisy that is more damaging to the greater population.

I'm gld this guy was caught and will do time...but his actions beyond what he did to those girls goes beyond them...:(

10. GOP made the victims, too...
I'll bet that at the same time Klaudt was raping his foster daughters (on the pretense of marketing their "reproductive eggs", no less!) he was voting against contraception, choice, etc etc.

Exactly. That's the second outrageous thing about this scandal--that those girls didn't have a CLUE about reproductive matters. That doesn't let Klaudt off the hook by any means; on the contrary, that's what we get from GOP/fundie "abstinence only" programs in place of real sex ed..."just say no" and by the way, babies are brought by storks...yeah, that's it...

Resulting in a populace who are ignorant zombies when it comes to knowing what's happening with their own bodies. :puke:

6. It's not merely the Party affiliations; it's the ELECTED OFFICES of the perps. And the "R's" win.

This is just a sample of some of the bills Klaudt co-sponsored:

http://legis.state.sd.us/sessions/2005/mbr250.htm

HB 1166
establish certain legislative findings pertaining to the health and rights of women, to revise the physician disclosure requirements to be made to a woman contemplating submitting to an abortion, and to provide for certain causes of action for professional negligence if an abortion is performed without informed consent.

HB 1233
establish a task force to study abortion and to provide for its composition, scope, and administration.

HB 1249
prohibit the performance of abortions, except to save the life of the mother, and to provide a penalty therefor and to provide for a delayed effective date.

HCR 1011
In support of free religious expression in public schools.

REPUBLICAN LEADER OF THE DAY-- MEET TED KLAUDT, SERIAL CHILD RAPIST AND RIGHT-WING EVANGELICAL LOON
(excerpt)
Like so many tightly wound repressed and mentally ill Republicans, Klaudt was preaching the moral superiority of the far right while he was abusing molesting children-- his own foster daughters and 2 state legislative pages! He "faces a long list of charges: eight counts of rape, two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, two counts of witness tampering, sexual contact with a person under 16, and stalking."
Court documents mention five possible victims. Three were foster children between the ages of 15 and 19 who lived with Klaudt's family. One is a cousin of one of those girls, and the fifth is a friend of Klaudt's daughter.

In the most disturbing accusation, the girls say Klaudt had them convinced they could earn up to $20,000 by donating their eggs to a fertility clinic. And even though he has no medical training, the girls say Klaudt did all the supposed "exams" and "procedures" himself.

Klaudt fancied himself a radical right Republican (and an evangelical) and in 2005 was a leader against the formation of the South Dakota Mainstream Coalition, meant to turn Republicans back towards mainstream conservatism....

The GOP Hypocrite of the Week
(excerpt)
We took note of another article from a South Dakota paper that began this way:

While Ted Klaudt served in the legislature, his name was attached to several bills designed to protect children from sex abuse. Klaudt served in the South Dakota House from 1998 to 2006. He served on the appropriations as well as the government operations and audit committees. And while in office, he co-sponsored several bills that took aim at sex offenders.

Klaudt was one of the house members who introduced legislation in 2006 that added more teeth to South Dakota's sex offender laws. The bill further defined sex crimes and spelled out new requirements for when, where and how sex offenders register in the state.

Klaudt also helped introduce a bill that created "community safety zones" where sex offenders are not allowed to live or hang out. The zones are within 500 feet of schools, public parks and swimming pools.

Ouch!

5. Republican core values shines through once again.

How is it that the fundies and these rethuglicans always gravitate to one another so often?

Must be that they have common interests.
