New rules make Syrian border a dead-end for Iraqis

Wed Nov 7, 2007 7:21am EST

By Yasser Faisal

AL-WALEED BORDER CROSSING, Iraq, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Outside a dusty, nearly deserted border crossing, Iraqis sit on battered suitcases, biding time and growing desperate as they wait to rejoin family members over the border in Syria.

"We want to go see our families who are in Syria. The rest of our family, we want to bring them back but they won't let us enter," a woman, who gave her name only as Bushra, told Reuters.

Bushra has waited for a visa for 10 days after a trip to Baghdad so that she can join her 10-year-old daughter in Syria.

She and scores of other Iraqis who have lined up at the al-Waleed border crossing in recent weeks are just a few of the Iraqis whose hopes of fleeing rampant violence in Iraq have been dashed by new, more stringent immigration rules. snip

"They told us in Baghdad that the borders are open and you have to pay $50 to get an entry visa. Then we came here and were told that there is no such thing," said Abbas Fadil, another traveller.

"What shall we do? ... We are starving and have no money."

1. I don't believe for one minute
that they are as disadvantaged as these people :

Indigenous people from northern Argentina have lodged a legal complaint against the government after more than 20 of them died of hunger.
They came to the capital, Buenos Aires, to air their grievances at a public hearing in the Supreme Court.

But they are not confident their voices will be heard.

The situation is worst in the northern Argentina province of Chaco, where several people have died and many more are suffering from malnutrition.

2. Maybe not yet
but if you're an American your tax dollars have contributed to their plight.

Do you think the US military will intervene on their behalf? Ha.

3. Gee, nice thread hijack, there. Stunningly impolite!!
Ya wanna compare and contrast? Hell, I'm sure you can find plenty of starving people on the African continent, too.

You could start your own thread if you want to discuss this Argentinian issue, you know.

6. Yes - there too

I simply made a comparative statement to put "starving" in perspective. There were other examples I could have used - it just happened that I recalled reading that one yesterday.

4. your logic is flawed... there are millions of displaced people in iraq, their suffering isnt negated
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 09:43 AM by sam sarrha
because of another situation.. thu the one you stated was caused by white house approval to cronie insiders 'vulture investments.. allowing investors to buy up debts of 3rd world countries for pennies..when money is appropriated to them for aids and relief.. the investors can demand to be paid first and tho dubya can deny it he doesn't.

there are about 2,400,000 displaced people in iraq, with HUGE tent cities in a desert with 120* to 140* temperatures in summer
http://www.globalvoicesonline.org/2007/06/20/arabeyes-world-refugee-day-focus-on-iraq/

are you saying the people in iraq are not suffering in a full blown civil war and possible genocide..?

there is something very wrong with your logic and very possibly with you. got any compassion for what we are doing to the iraqi's for profit.?
