Please help: Impeachment Activity

"They had forgotten, if they ever knew, that the Constitution is designed to be a law for rulers and people alike at all times and under all circumstances; and that no doctrine involving more pernicious consequences to the commonweal has ever been invented by the wit of a man than the notion that any of its provisions can be suspended by the President for any reason whatsoever.

"On the contrary, they apparently believed that the President is above the Constitution, and has autocratic power to suspend its provisions if he decides in his own unreviewable judgment that his action in so doing promotes his own political interests or the welfare of the nation. As one of them testified before the Senate Select Committee, they believed that the President has the autocratic power to suspend the Fourth Amendment whenever he imagines that some indefinable aspect of national security is involved. …

"When all is said, the only sure antidote for future Watergates is understanding of fundamental principles and intellectual and moral integrity in the men and women who achieve or are entrusted with government or political power."
--Senator Samuel J. Ervin, Jr; Individual Statement; The Senate Watergate Report

I would like to ask those DUers who are in favor of the House Judiciary Committee moving forward on the Kucinich Resolution for the impeachment of VP Dick Cheney to do me a big favor. I know that there are differences of opinion on this forum about the issues involved in the organic grass roots process of advocating for impeachment, and I want to be clear: I am only asking those who believe that congress should honor their oath of office to honor and protect the Constitution help me with this.

In the "Introduction" to the historic Ervin Committee Report, it notes that one of the critical functions of the Congress is "to inform the public of any wrongdoing or abuses" of power they find the members of the executive office have committed. (see pages 39-42)

This congressional duty "should be preferred even to its legislation function," according to President Woodrow Wilson (Congressional Government; page 303). This view, which the Ervin Committee said "cannot be over-emphasized," is also a well-documented part of case law as determined in two USSC cases: {2} Watkins v. United States, 354 US 178, 200 (1957); and {2} United States v. Rumely, 345 US 41, 43 (1953).

I am hoping that DUers will call, fax and e-mail Representative John Conyers to politely remind him of this. I have the following phone number, fax number, and e-mail address:

phone: 202-225-5126
fax: 202-225-0072
John.Conyers@mail.house.gov

Please consider using this post as a "copy & paste" resource for your e-mail, and a reference for fax and/or phone calls. Thank you for your support on this.

Impeachment is the cure not a punishment

10. Here's my email H20 Man. Thanks for this. Let's all add our voices.
Dear Sir:

I called your office this morning and spoke with a very polite and eloquent young man who shared his opinion, and what may be yours as well, that the freshman congressman felt too imperiled in their districts to risk making either an up or down vote on the impeachment issue.

I disagree that this should be your primary consideration and would like to draw your attention to the following.

Thank you for your consideration, sir.

Best regards,

23. Another small point: Bush finally tops Nixon -- in unpopularity.
GALLUP: Bush Finally Tops Nixon -- In Unpopularity -- As Call for Iraq Pullout Hits New Peak

By E&P Staff

Published: November 06, 2007 2:50 PM ET

NEW YORK For almost two years, President Bush has been threatening to unseat Richard M. Nixon as the most unpopular president in the history of the Gallup poll, and it finally happened this week.

The latest USA TODAY/Gallup survey finds Bush with a 31% approval rating -- and for the first time ever in the polling history, 50% say they "strongly disapprove" of a president.

The previous high (or low?) was a 48% strong disapproval rating for Nixon at the worst moments of Watergate in 1974.

The telephone survey of 1,024 adults was conducted last Friday through Sunday.

1-800-828-0498 is one of the several Capitol Hill Operator numbers.

My Congresswoman, Lois Capps, voted against tabling and for sending Kucinich's bill of impeachment to the Judiciary Committee. She's a good egg, that one.

For all the rest of them my message was short and sweet: "For the Love of God Will You Impeach Dick Cheney." For Conyers I added heartfelt thanks for all he's done to bring this administration to account -- no harm in adding a little sweetener when warranted.

Tried calling DiFi's office for good measure so I could speak my mind about sending Mukasey out of committee, but as always I ended up on hold and was timed-out automatically after 2 minutes.

Hekate
:hi:

edited to add: Just remembered to call Dennis Kucinich's office to give him a big thank you! Nothing like having a toll-free number.

I think she is very good on a lot of issues. But I know that she is very wrong on this one.

One of Speaker Pelosi's greatest strengths is her sense of loyalty. Both her friends and opponents in Washington DC say that her sense of loyalty is something they respect. I want Speaker Pelosi to have the same sense of loyalty to the US Constitution.

40. I sent this to Rep. Conyers:
Dear Representative Conyers,

As I understand it, the job of the Congress is to defend the Constitution and protect the people, from whom the power of government is derived.

Furthermore, I don't see where it is your job to protect the executive from the consequences of their criminal and anti-democratic enterprises. Even if all the possible legislation has been written, Congress still has the responsibility of supervising that laws are faithfully being executed.

It is very frustrating to have worked for the election of Democrats, only to see them carrying out the Republican agenda, especially since that agenda is illegal.

I urge you to put us back on the right track by supporting HR 333 and extracting the criminals from office.

Considering your fine work in the past, I'm at a loss to understand why you have forgotten us. The "legislative agenda" argument that some Democrats proffer is a red herring. Presidential vetoes will keep you treading water, whereas the threat of impeachment will put pressure on the president to advance the people's business. Do you want your legacy to be "He looked the other way."?

Respectfully,

Thanks for posting this H2O Man.

42. Done... Done... & Done
Instead of working for my own pockets this morning I've been working for the American people, since our congress refuses to do so. I've called, e-mailed and called my congresswoman, Matsui, (a lot of good that did) called twice conyers office (hung up on once) and faxed and e-mailed his office as well. Add to my list DiFi (I know, I know it will do no good) and I even called Polozi and Hoyer... Now I plan to go out and hold up a sign: "Will Impeach For Food!"

All of you people have been great. I want to thank H20 Man for getting the ball rolling. I'm new here and it makes me feel less crazy to know all of you great folks believe what I believe.

Thank you all.

49. Rep. Conyers is overwhelmed. Literally. I just got this message.
I just spent five minutes on the phone with one of Rep. Conyer's lovely and mature sounding aides. She asked me right off if I was one of those who was part of the "barrage" of calls.

He's one of the longest standing people in Congress. And he is not going to be swayed by what we have to say. (This is the aide speaking.) That may sound harsh, but he has the vision and the interest of the American people. My message was to support H Res. 333. And after what seemed like a very long talk, she simply asked me if I trust Mr. Conyers.

One thing she said was a bit telling. That this resolution Kucinich has introduced has essentially been plopped in Conyer's lap. As though now he must take on Kucinich's business.

This may all sound rather impersonal and distanced. But like she said, Conyers is a thinking man. I don't know what the alternative it. And if anyone plopped anything, it was the Republicans and their vote against tabling the resolution.

So I got a little insight today. But as I told the aide, our voices haven't been heard. This is why people are frantic to see someone listening, and to seek justice.

I'm not so sure our calls to Conyers are going to be as effective as it may seem. And I believe he's a man who knows what we waI'll sa

54. The calls
are serving a purpose. We are not disrupting his office, or expressing any opposition to Rep. Conyers. we are exercising our rights as outlined in Amendment #1 of that Bill of Rights.

You handled the conversation perfectly. Thank you.

John Conyers is a good and decent man, and I respect him as a leader in Congress. That does not mean, however, that he is always right about everything, or that he can afford to ignore the voices from the grass roots. Trust is a two-way street, and the democratic leadership must honor that fact -- especially when there are requests for us to invest in their campaigns.

A final note: I wish that Rep. Conyers' staff would consider what Malcolm X used to say about "trust": that he liked to rate people on a scale of 0 to 100, based on how much he trusted them. And he didn't trust anyone 100% -- not even himself.

58. Thank you.
That is exactly how I felt about it. I was happy that she was candid. But I was disturbed that she would want to eliminate a part of the process. That being, US. :)

Trust and ignorance can blur. I am starting to wake up and stop trusting people. I have spent my life trusting everyone. And look where we are now. Not enough skepticism.

67. Trust is good.
We are adults, fully capable of mature trust. That does not mean that you, Rep. Conyers, and/or I are going to see eye-to-eye, exactly the same, on a variety of political and social issues. Nor should we -- for whenever any two people think exactly alike, Malcolm taught us, only one of them is thinking.

Rep. Conyers understands that mature trust implies that when people do not agree, they are polite and up front with one another. They have enough respect to listen to each other, with an open mind, and that they also respectfully tell each other what they disagree about.

This is what you did today with his aide, and you did it very well. Although I heard this from a source other than Rep. Conyers' office, there are many in congress -- including freshmen and elders -- who are beginning to recognize the power of the message of the progressive democratic grass roots. It may be they want the loose-knit organization that can get people to call/e-mail to lobby, or the money that can be raised when we put our nickles and dimes together. But they do recognize strength.

69. Often I believe that humility transcends intelligence.
And I thank you for your input. I am strengthened by it. Not that I need to be stronger. But that I am weak. I suppose training wheels come to mind. Haha.

I am at the moment, quite disoriented. In a good way. I just got the counter offer on my property. And I am pretty darned excited. I have a piece of land. And I shouldn't be posting that on this thread. But it's engulfing me entirely.

I love that Malcolm statement. So much common sense. He cut right to the core. Man, I wish I had that kind of street knowledge. I was just a priveleged white kid. But I'm learning. Today I realized something. We all rely on one another. What we're fighting here is those who just don't realize that. There is nothing big about being independent. We get along, or we don't. I better shut up. :)

52. I sent this.
Dear Congressman Conyers,

Rather than tie up your office phone, I'm writing today to ask that you consider moving forward with the impeachment of Mr. Cheney.

A friend of mine reminded me this morning of this quotation:

"When all is said, the only sure antidote for future Watergates is understanding of fundamental principles and intellectual and moral integrity in the men and women who achieve or are entrusted with government or political power."
--Senator Samuel J. Ervin, Jr; Individual Statement; The Senate Watergate Report

Coincidentally, Gallup is showing that the Bush administration has now bested the Nixon administration -- in unpopularity. This is a link to the article which I have posted to the San Francisco Impeachment blog.

http://sanfranciscoimpeachnow.blogspot.com/2007/11/gallup-bush-finally-tops-nixon-in.html

I know that in the days ahead, we will be able to continue to count on your diligent and thoughtful public service.

Sincerely

This automated response is to acknowledge that your email has been delivered to my email account: John.Conyers@mail.house.gov.
Thank you for taking the time to email me about your concerns. I truly appreciate hearing from you.

Although I wish I could respond immediately, I receive thousands of letters and emails each week and it takes time to provide you with a thoughtful response. Here's how you can help ensure a more rapid response:

1. If you included your complete street address and zip code in the 14th Congressional District of Michigan, you do not need to do anything else. I will respond to your email as soon as possible.

2. If you live in the 14th District of Michigan, but you did not include your street address or zip in your email, please re-send your entire message and include your street address so that I can reach you.

3. If you do not live in the 14th Congressional District of Michigan, I will take your concerns under consideration. However, Congressional courtesy dictates that Representatives be given the opportunity to assist their own constituents. If you have included your address I will forward your message to your representative. If you are unsure of who your representative is, you can look it up at www.house.gov/writerep.
While you are waiting for a response to your letter, you can find further information about the legislation I am working on and the services my district office offers by accessing my website at www.house.gov/conyers.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I am honored to represent you in Congress and I look forward to addressing your concerns.

96. i'm there --
thx once again, H2O.

Here's what I sent:

Dear Representative Conyers:

I’ve donated to you in the past. You do not represent my district, but you are one of few in Congress who have represented my ideals.

I just gave to Rep. Kucinich, although he also does not represent my district.

I’m well aware, as I believe you are too, that far greater "probable cause" exists to believe that V.P. Cheney has committed high crimes and misdemeanors than for the vast majority of warrantless violations of the privacy of innocent U.S. citizens that have occurred under the current administration. Failure even to investigate these and the many other strongly indicated violations of U.S. law constitutes an open invitation to ever greater abuse.

The people cry out not for vengeance but for simple justice. Without it, no nation can endure.

The Constitution, one of the greatest achievements of human civilization, has been shredded.

It was your sworn duty to protect it. Please help stitch it back together.

Sincerely,

It's important that we remind people like Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Conyers that, although we may not be in their district, because they have risen to leadership positions, they do represent every citizen in this country. The Speaker of the House and the head of the House Judiciary Committee are not parochial positions.

107. Done...I prefaced your info with this....
Dear Representative Conyers,

This is not about how much I like or dislike VP Cheney, although I do dislike him immensely. This is about the Constitution, which I happen to be quite fond of. As a fourth grade teacher, responsible for teaching my students about their rights and responsibilities, I am finding it a more difficult task to do. I used to be able to review the Bill of Rights and tell them, these are your rights. Now, I find myself telling them, these are the rights you are supposed to have. I haven’t the heart to tell them they no longer do.

This Administration as you know, has shredded our Constitution, repeatedly lied and misled the American people, harmed our reputation in the world, and put our economic future in jeopardy. They need to be held accountable, even if it puts some other things, which I know are really important, on hold.

There is nothing more important than the very foundation of our fragile Republic. Without it, nothing else matters.

Your info followed, then a request to move the resolution forward and my Michigan address.

My subject head was A Teacher's View of the Kucinich Resolution.

Thanks for the post.

one final thought: I said this before in other posts. We need to be their backbone. Instead of jumping all over the Dem leaders when they cave, we need to take the positive action to let them know they are backed up by the people. I am certain beyond doubt, that the dem leaders are under massive pressure and likely physical threats to their well-being and loved ones. do you honestly think that people who would start a war based on lies and motivated by greed would hesitate to use any means of intimidation to quell opposition?

Un-circle the firing squad and let us stand shoulder to shoulder and take aim at the real enemy!

128. My Fax Said:
Dear Congressman Conyers:

It is with the greatest respect that I request you drop the calculator and place both hands on the Constitution;

"They had forgotten, if they ever knew, that the Constitution is designed to be a law for rulers and people alike at all times and under all circumstances; and that no doctrine involving more pernicious consequences to the commonweal has ever been invented by the wit of a man than the notion that any of its provisions can be suspended by the President for any reason whatsoever.”

In the "Introduction" to the historic Ervin Committee Report, it notes that one of the critical functions of the Congress is "to inform the public of any wrongdoing or abuses" of power they find the members of the executive office have committed.

Sincerely,

129. Should I read them speech excerpts from MLK in jail?
I'll do it. I'm on the phone even as I type.

NOTE: They promised to "pass my thoughts along" but weren't interested in hearing MLK's speech.

Also, they said the number of calls is "a few" today. To work!!!

131. Sent mine
When simple duty requires enormous moral pressure and acts of heroism it is a measure of the danger to the law and a measure of the villainy it must be applied to.

This same logic is embraced by those concerned to do harm to the republic for political gain. Impeachment has been rarely used and twice to its full extent for partisan purposes with relatively small legal rationale for its justification. As a result, lawfully minded people have avoided the remedy even when dutiful and indeed necessary to the nation. Watergate did not pursue as much as required after the relief of the Nixon resignation. As with the Clinton impeachment, the rationale of healing and avoidance settled in to guarantee a crippling lack of follow-through and shelving of the principles of the Constitution itself. One might say the Nuremberg Trails fell short as well under the same justifications.

One blanches at beginning and looks right away for an end. In later years one has regrets and doubts when it comes back with a vengeance. The scale of the malfeasance and the threat to law itself, the nation itself, is so appalling and so legislatively difficult and uncertain is another backward justification with the same complicitous, dangerous result. To do one's duty without guarantee of outcome is heroism. It is a measure of what must be countered.

The simple duty is to pursue the course. The not so simple thing is to do it with force, speed and follow-through and by all means to enlist the engagement of the American people in a fair examination of the truth under its own assault by the same forces involved in the offenses of the executive branch.

Impeachment alone can right the perspective and restore the actual functioning of a legitimate government of the law and of the people. The abandonment of this remedy has mutated the government reality into the destructive impunity we see to today and will continue to see even if the evasive Democratic nominee stumbles evasively through uncountered fraud into the ravaged chief executive position. In this you have my full support, because you are no oath breaker, no secret allegiance to some darkly higher good which the law was set down to check.

132. I did too.
Dear Congressman Conyers:

I won't bore you or your staff with all the arguments supporting impeachment, neither will I remind you of your duty.

Please, however, know that every day I am worried about the state of this nation, I fear for the well-being of my family, I fear for my child's future.

Too much has gone terribly wrong, and while nothing can be undone, we can stop the perpetuation of wrongdoing. We can stop the perpetuation of wrongdoing, and you have the power to catalyze action in this regard. I plead with you to exercise that power and to exorcise our nation's leadership of the malcontents and criminals that have pirated our common course.

Our nation is ill and needs healing. It is time to clean house.

It is never too late to change direction.

Most sincerely,
D**** J********

133. My two-cents
After briefly stating my strong opinion on bringing the impeachment hearings to the forefront as quickly as possible I asked if they were receiving a lot of calls for this action and the lady said they were. Then I asked what she thought. She seemed put off guard, like no ones ever asked her opinion. She tried to be evasive, but then I asked if I were to lie and it directly caused the death of a person, I'd be at least guilty of man-slaughter, correct? She answered yes. I went on to say that there has been enough evidence in the public domain to believe that cheney has lied and that near one million people have died, that certainly has to be man-slaughter, if not genocide, would you agree? Again she answered yes.

I thanked her and again made it clear there can be no more important issue before the committee than the removal from office murderer(s) that occupy said offices and that any effort to say otherwise rings false.

139. kick..........Ed Schultz was ranting against Conyers and Wasserman-Schultz today
on his show. Callers were angry...a couple remembered the Conyers Basement Hearings...and Conyers seeming to promise that Judiciary would take up impeachment hearings....and where are they.

Since Schultz was supposed to be the "moderate" to get the Limbaugh audience....he sure seems to have changed his positioning. His ranting was just like many of us here on DU who are so angry with our Dems. He ranted about Pelosi taking impeachment "off table" because there are so many more important things for the Dems to be doing" when he says there's nothing more important than to start investigations of Cheney before they do any more damage.

If we Dems had a bigger radio presense we could have gotten the ball rolling sooner. But, without a media it's up to us.

140. done and done (my message)
It is in America's best interest if you would move forward the impeachment process. In the "Introduction" to the historic Ervin Committee Report, it notes that one of the critical functions of the Congress is "to inform the public of any wrongdoing or abuses" of power they find the members of the executive office have committed. (see pages 39-42). Your courage is needed, our people need answers. You and I know too well the consequences of not following just proceedings in order to restore balance to the constitution. There is much this country needs to accomplish, and it cannot move forward with courage. Shed your fear and rise to the occasion to be a Patriot!

145. What happen to using Section 603 of Jefferson manual?
Edited on Fri Nov-09-07 08:44 AM by flashl
May 1, 2006-Vermonters deliver impeachment resolutions to Congress

An effort that began in March culminated Monday when three vermont communities delivered a message to House Speaker Dennis Hastert: Start the process to impeach Pres. George Bush.

Six vermont towns passed resolutions on Town Meeting Day calling for Bush’s impeachment. On Monday, Ellen Tenney, a bookstore owner from Rockingham, hand delivered petitions to Hastert, an Illinois Republican.

After meeting with Hastert’s staff, Tenney delivered copies of the resolutions to Rep. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, and Rep. John Conyers, D-MI, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, where an impeachment probe must originate in Congress.

...

Correctly worded impeachment resolutions must be passed from the speaker to the Judiciary Committee. If only one member of the House brings one of these resolutions to the floor, the House must debate it. Thanks to Jefferson we have the power to force this conversation. The time for a constitutional People’s Revolution is at hand.

I guess the operating words here are "correctly worded impeachment resolution" for a state's resolution to invoke Section 603 of the Jefferson manual.

Others have suggested that since DK's efforts that a resolution should be put forward everyday until Congress acts on an impeachment resolution. If states have the power to bring the impeachment issue before Congress and "halt" all of its business because the people spoke, why isn't using Section 603 seen as a viable option?
