Has he investigated Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell ? of course he has not, why ? Yes, lets lynch the black man on youtube and let Jimmy Swaggert go to hookers. Originalpckelly, Are you in cahoots with Grassley ? When will the Catholic Church get called to the carpet, What about those southern baptists that use the church as a republican campaign fund ! Remember this, black church's have played a major role in gettin out the Demcratic vote and seeing this man go down does no one but Grassley any good!

Why should a pastor not fly on a private jet, many celebs do, Al Gore does, it's the church's money and Grassley should not interfere. If he is doing somethin illegal then IRS or local police can handle it. Why should Grassley woory about it, doesn't he have some better things to do ?
Maybe he can go after Blackwater or halliburton !

catwoman, Did I say Gore was a preacher at any church? no, it was clear that I said that other people fly in private planes, and most likly hannity. It is not illegal but should be. The are toys of the rich but as long as they are legal I do not see why a preacher can't do it. It is the church's money not Grassleys. And I am quite sure that Grassley flys on private jets and while he might not drive a rolls he is driven by Chuefer at quite a cost to taxpayers. Investigate Grassley.
Bishop Eddie Long is very inspirational and does alot of work in our community. People give him money, Grassley takes our money.

It is the church's money and not the taxpayers. Can you go to the local Church and tell them to write a check to pay for a road or school, no you can't, it Is the church's money and I did not compare gore to a preacher, I stated that he and many others do it and to tell a preacher he can't is discrimination. And as far as your ass, I don't know if it is inspirational or not. Try getting off it once and let me see it. Are you mad at eddie long because he has such a following or because he really is a pimp that says you are not marketable! Really catwoman, you think the money collected by the church belongs to the Gov't. Prove it. Can you site a law or statute!

Sure the congregates give that money and the church collects. But you are forgetting one important part of the puzzle. THEY GET TAX EXEMPTIONS ON ALL OF THAT MONEY AND ALL OF THE ASSETS THEY PURCHASE WITH IT. That means that all of us have to pony up a little bit more to write that check you so conveniently cite in your first sentence to pay for roads and schools. I don't go that church and when Georgia comes begging with hat in hand for money to help with some badly needed water projects or new schools, why should I have to tolerate a church where the preachers have not one but several multi-million dollar homes? And before you go there, I feel the same way with any organized religon that seems to spend money way out of proportion with the message they are supposed to be spreading.

And don't even get me started on all of the problems that are confronting the Black community that could be better served by using that money. We lead the Nation in all the wrong categories: Single Parent Households, New HIV\AIDS cases, Mortality from most of the major forms of cancer, Percentage of men in jail

Spare me. Black people have better things to worry about than these 2 assholes.

edited for spelling: Cause I get pissed when people play a fucked up race card.

and spending the money on Private Jets and Rolls Royces and saying you are doing it for god is a fucking con. Black, white, yellow, green, red I don't give a shit about your color, you steal money from people by convincing them that you need the money to help the church spread the word of God, then spend it on lavish gifts for yourself is stealing. I agree that Falwell, Robertson and the like should also be ran out of business and have their tax exempt status taken away. But just because this dude is black does not make him exempt from being a fucking scumbag.

conspicuous consumption and self-aggrandizing behavior. At least that's what I thought Jesus taught.

Church money needs to be used to HELP poor people and the sick and elderly.

66. Conspicuous consumption is actually a part of Creflo Dollar's "theology"
which is best summed up as "pray and donate everything you can (and even what you can't) to Jesus (and given that Jesus isn't around to accept the donation, Creflo will gladly take it off your hands), and Jesus will give you tremendous material wealth in this lifetime.

Rev. Dollar does not offer to stand in for the absent Jesus when it comes to the part about giving his followers great wealth. But he has long made it a part of his preaching to show off all of his material wealth, displaying it as evidence that Jesus give him gobs and oodles of wealth.

Sometimes abuses are so flagrant they leave me nearly speachless. Where do I even begin to critique such baldfaced theft? I'm writing a book in which the not-so-good Reverend appears as an example of the momentarily trendy theological fallacy of "believe in material things, get lots of material things". But sometimes I think I need to pull him from the pages. He's more a pure scam artist than someone engaging in circular reasoning that concludes with the poor are theologically at fault for poverty. I may need to stick to some of the tamer word-faith practitioners, for examples, people whose arguments and behavior is just credible enough to be worth analyzing.

How many Bibles would that wasted money buy? How many hungry children would it feed? This is what Jesus wanted us to do. Our righteousness is but filthy rags, you know.

"Why should a pastor not fly on a private jet, many celebs do,"

The very concept of a private jet is in direct and dramatic contra-distinction to the mission of the contemporary Christian church.

But then I think we both know the IRS and Grassley aren't going after someone for mere ownership of a private jet. They're being looked at due to possible fraud.

My mom goes to a megachurch and her pastor's a rightwing misogynist pig (he has been a featured speaker on Promise Keepers!) who invited Jakes to come speak at the church for a men's event. Among his demands was the church put him up at the fucking WALDORF-ASTORIA. Limos to shuffle him to and fro from JFK and around the city, with driver. This gap tooth MF thought he was the damn King of Siam.

One thing I can say for mom's pastor, he told Jakes to go choke on a pork chop sammich.

44. Please
Try to apply a little critical thinking why don't you? Especially if you are going to play a sorry ass race card.

I'm watching for potential implications for groups that are doing good. But I ain't shedding any tears for Creflo and Eddie. Not by a long fucking shot.

Yes Black Churches have been the foundation of the Civil Rights movement. But today a lot of these large Mega-churches are nothing more than ATMs for the benefit of a few. Where are Creflos and Eddies church on the Jena 6 and Genarlow Wilson cases? Seems like I heard a chorus of crickets when it came to those. But Eddie could organize a march in defense of traditional marriages. Hmmm..What was the point of that I wonder???

Actually as a Black man, I think the transgressions of these "ministers", both legal and moral are even worse than those of their White counterparts for precisely the reason you cite: the Black church has historically been about confronting civil injustices not how to make a buck.

This is an investigation that is long needed. I am glad it's a Republican rather than Democrat doing the requesting. These talibangelists are accountable to noone and are heavily subsidized by their tax exempt status.

35. Hey, don't forget Paul and Jan Crouch, of The Holy Land in Orlando.
Scores lose jobs as Holy Land undergoes extreme makeover (Orlando, FL), October 21, 2007

Are these people on the list to be investigated??

Paul and Jan Crouch, founders of the world's largest Christian media empire, walk a little slower these days. But that hasn't slowed down the whirlwind transformation of their newest acquisition: Orlando's Holy Land Experience theme park.

.....

The Crouches are proponents of what is known as the "prosperity gospel." It is based on the precept of "sacrificial giving by faith," which encourages followers to donate to their financial limits -- and in some cases beyond -- believing the contribution will miraculously multiply.
While Baptists, such as Holy Land's founder, the Rev. Marvin Rosenthal, do not subscribe to the prosperity gospel, the doctrine has worked for Trinity and the Crouches. They drive luxury cars, occupy 30 houses across the country and fly on a 19-seat corporate turbojet -- all owned by Trinity.

On the list so far:

November 6, 2007

CBS News has learned Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, is investigating six prominent televangelist ministries for possible financial misconduct.

Letters were sent Monday to the ministries demanding that financial statements and records be turned over to the committee by December 6th.

According to Grassley's office, the Iowa Republican is trying to determine whether or not these ministries are improperly using their tax-exempt status as churches to shield lavish lifestyles.

The six ministries identified as being under investigation by the committee are led by: Paula White, Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, Eddie Long, Kenneth Copeland and Benny Hinn. Three of the six - Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland and Creflo Dollar - also sit on the Board of Regents for the Oral Roberts University.

Time to clean out another nest of leeches sucking the people dry.

Government and religious beliefs, both, have been hijacked and perverted beyond recognition in America.

56. These are the churches (besides Dollar's) that he's investigating.
It would be interesting to know why these and not the O'Steens and the Crouches, as well as a half-dozen others.

The other four evangelists who got financial request letters from Sen. Grassley are Paula White Ministries of Tampa, Florida; Benny Hinn Ministries of Grapevine, Texas; Joyce Meyer Ministries of Fenton, Missouri; and Kenneth Copeland Ministries of Newark, Texas.

58. they're going after the ones they have the most on
as of now.

i can tell you that they're ALL running scared and wondering who's next.

the last few times i tuned in to get a dose of Recreational Christianity, i noticed that they're putting all kinds of disclaimers and qualifiers into their begging rants. check out TBN's Praise-A-Thon this week. MUCH more low-key and full of disclaimers.

instead of saying "you WILL get a miracle if you send us money", they're now showing disclaimers that those who donate will be part of the "miracle" of broadcasting TBN into every nook and cranny.

they're ALL scared. about time!!!

60. Osteen is another sleaze.
His wife got on a Southwest flight to Aspen and pitched a fit. They live in a $2 million home in Tanglewood, which is probably the richest hood in Houston. Rich trash.

They rented the former Summit, basketball/rock concert arena, a/k/a Compaq Center, in a 30 year lease sweetheart deal from the city, for their church.

Joel Osteen's qualifications for the ministry: Dropped out after one semester at Anal Roberts university, or "Six Flags Over Jeebus".

65. ok...i'm gonna puke
"every prophet in the bible was prosperous..." WTF? What is his definition of prosperous? Let's just look at the new testament, shall we. Major prophet number one was John the Baptist...he lived in the wilderness, wore naught but animal skins and ate locusts and wild honey (which might have been a challenge to get). Major prophet number 2 (and the purported son of god) never owned a home of his own, probably slept out of doors most of the time...and he was crucified!

Watching this sort of 'justification' allows me to cease all wonder at why people have a distaste for Christianity.

too...where the heck does he get that? Reminds me that he simply cherry-picks the scriptures for his flock. Heaven forbid someone should read the whole bible...then they might get the RIGHT idea!

64. Here's the problem with the ministers Grassley picked on
Yes, they're moneychanges in the temple, but they're not actually POLITICAL enough. None of them have done as much to jump aboard and advertise Right-wing scum causes the way John Haggie, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggart and Rick Warren have done. I would not be shocked to hear they all associated in some unacceptable way with a known Democrat.
