MUKASEY NOT A DONE DEAL!!! (More Sens Come Out Opposed-Fillibuster Possible!)
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 03:32 PM by Beetwasher
Both of Montana's senators come out against Mukasey.

Late Update: Colorado's Salazar will also vote against.

Is Mukasey Really a Done Deal?

13. Amazing what having to stand for election in 08 can accomplish.....I hope he filibusters
'cause if he won't, then it's just a safe old way to vote against while knowing that the nomination will pass.

Time for me to start making some calls.

3. We only need 40 against, I think
If we have 40, it won't achieve cloture.

12. You know, we wouldn't be talking about this at all if the chair
of the Judiciary Committee had kept his word about not scheduling hearings until he had all the subpoenaed materials in hand. But, now that we caved on that one, it will be easier for them to cave on this one.

23. Truth hurts, doesn't it?
Leahy talks tough. Gotta say that for him. "I'll give you one week...one week...to get back to me on Maher Arar!" We're still waiting.

"We won't schedule hearings until we get everything we subpoenaed." NO subpoenaed material...none, nada, zero, zilch and HEARINGS ACCOMPLISHED!

"We will hold Miers and Rove in contempt." (Jeopardy theme song, here.)

19. I have, but I'm not holding my breath . . .
Ken "Night Horse" Salazar votes GOP-Lite about 49% of the time, so I am shocked that he is taking a stand on Mukasey at all. I am not going to hold my breath waiting for him to act LIKE A REAL DEMOCRAT.

17. Opposition to the nomination doesn't always equal opposition to cloture.
Have these senators indicated they will oppose the cloture motion?

22. Who would most likely filibuster so far?
Kerry
Kennedy
Dodd
Feingold
Boxer

Would Obama & Clinton take that stance? If one of them took the lead, a lot more would fall in line, I would think.

28. I wouldn't be suprised if they reversed their vote (and it was FeinSTEIN)
I saw something on Olbermen where Feinstein's vote was a sympathy vote so Schumer wouldn't take all the heat for voting "YES".

However, I think Schumer's slate is clean. He got himself into a pickle by recommending this guy and then pretty much voting for him after stating that Murgasky would pass in the Judiciary.

Schumer has done his job. His slate is clean and he (along with Feinstein) can redeem themselves by voting "NO" now.

I got an email from Harry Reid who said...if Murkasey did not come out against waterboarding he would not vote for him.

29. Ask him to filibuster, if one emerges. I bet some of the candidates would be
willing to try to convert popular dismay and disgust with torture into some votes. Leading a filibuter would do just that.

30. I wouldn't be shocked of Schumer & Feinstein actually supported the Filibuster
Schumer stuck his foot in really really really deep with his initial support of the Mukasey back when Bush was making selections. On Olberman last night, there was that guy from Newsweek who said that Feinstein was essentially voting "YES" so all the heat wouldn't fall just on Schumer (if Schumer had voted "NO" I think she would have too).

Schumer's slate is clean now - he stuck with his word on Mukasey in Judiciary and he's free to do whatever he wants on the floor vote. I would NOT be suprised to see Schumer and Feinstein both support the filibuster
